We had an amazing time at our Systems Engineering Welcome Carnival, celebrating both our new and returning students! 🎓🎉

The sun was shining, the yard games were going, and there was plenty of delicious carnival food to enjoy! 🌭🍿

🏙️ Building a digital twin for a healthier, more sustainable city!

Cornell Systems Engineering researchers Oliver Gao, Xinlai Liu, and Yishuo Jiang are helping advance a new approach to understanding urban air quality through a Sustainable Urban Digital Twin. 🌎💻

Using Manhattan as a test case, the team developed a virtual framework that integrates real-world environmental data with machine learning and Bayesian modeling to monitor carbon dioxide levels, identify potential emission hotspots, and visualize changing conditions across the city.

🔬 The research represents an early step toward urban intelligence systems that could one day help planners and policymakers evaluate interventions and make data-driven decisions for healthier, more sustainable, and more resilient communities.

🌎 Cornell Systems Engineering research takes the national stage!

Cornell Systems Engineering faculty members Tim Fraser and Haiyan Deng delivered the closing keynote at the National Society of Professional Engineers Annual Conference 2026, joining Gina Park, Ph.D. ’24, for a conversation on the environmental impacts of New York City’s congestion pricing program.

🏙️ Building on their landmark research, the team discussed findings showing an average 22% reduction in daily maximum PM2.5 concentrations attributable to the policy during its initial evaluation period—and what those results could mean for other U.S. cities considering similar approaches.

👏 Congratulations to Tim and Haiyan on bringing Cornell Systems Engineering research to a national audience of engineers and policymakers!

🚌⚡ Faculty Research Spotlight: Ricardo Daziano!

Ricardo Daziano, Cornell professor and Systems Engineering field faculty member, is the lead author of a new study exploring how electric buses influence commuters’ transportation choices.

The research found that riders value the quieter, smoother experience and environmental benefits of electric buses—but those benefits alone may not be enough to convince drivers to leave their cars behind. Improving factors such as wait times and service reliability may also be critical to encouraging greater public transit use.

👏 The study also features Siqi Feng, Cornell Systems Engineering Ph.D. candidate, as a co-author!

🎉 Faculty Spotlight: John Meluso!

Congratulations to John Meluso, Assistant Teaching Professor in Cornell Systems Engineering, who is the lead author of a new perspective paper published in Nature Human Behaviour exploring how organizations can more effectively design and manage “open” practices.

Working alongside an international team of collaborators, John examines how transparency, inclusion, and decision-making interact within open organizations and identifies seven practical guidelines leaders can use to build more effective, resilient, and sustainable open communities.

The research draws lessons from fields ranging from science and education to open-source software and explores important questions about the future of openness—including the growing impact of artificial intelligence on open systems.
