Science & Technology Studies Cornell

Science & Technology Studies Cornell The Department of Science & Technology Studies is dedicated to research and teaching about scientific knowledge and technology in its social context.

In light of the importance of science and technology (S&T) in the world today, there is a need for scholarly work on its social dimensions. In their research, faculty members examine S&T both in contemporary societies and through historical investigations. The goal is to build a body of theory and empirical findings about:

The social processes through which scientific and technical knowle

dge—whether packaged into texts, people, machines, images, or other forms—is created, evaluated, challenged, spread, transformed, and fitted into social relations. The ways people use, reconfigure, and contest scientific knowledge and technology. The normative issues entangled in scientific and technological developments. The place of science and technology in the modern world.

Alumni! Giving Day is tomorrow! This year, STS would like to challenge you to give a gift in the amount of the year of your degree. If you graduated in 2005, you could give $5 or $2005 – we don’t care about the amount as much as the show of support. What do you say? Can your class give the most gifts??

You're about to make a big difference for Cornell!

It is with sadness that we write of the passing on Sunday of our friend and founding member of the department, Marie Underhill Noll Professor Emerita Margaret W. Rossiter.

Margaret was a trailblazing historian of science, known worldwide for her superb studies of the history of American women in science. She won the Pfizer award for the best book in the history of science from the History of Science Society (HSS) in 1997 for Women Scientists in America: Before Affirmative Action, 1940-1972 and was awarded the Society’s Sarton Medal for lifetime scholarly achievement in 2022. In 2004, the HSS council voted unanimously to change the name of ‘The Women’s Prize’ to ‘The Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize’ in recognition of Margaret’s pioneering work in the field.

Details regarding her services are not yet complete, but they will take place in Massachusetts and her family is hoping to hold the services before the semester starts. We will post more here as we have information.
