We often don’t realize how much sway we have over others, says Vanessa Bohns in her book You Have More Influence Than You Think: How We Underestimate Our Power of Persuasion, and Why It Matters (Norton 2021). The book, selected as the Cornell Dyson School of Applied Economics & Management’s Summer Read 2025, invites readers to reconsider everyday interactions: asking for help from friends, giving feedback at work, making a request of a stranger.

Through original research and real-world examples, Bohns shows how people are more likely to listen, agree, and help than we tend to assume—and how our failure to recognize that influence can lead to missed opportunities or unintended consequences.

Summer is a great time to dive into books that challenge conventional thinking, spark innovation, and deepen understanding of the ever-changing business landscape for leaders. This series features some of the newest titles by faculty and alumni. For more recommended reading, check out the books on Dean Andrew Karolyi’s shelf. https://bit.ly/4lmkSyl

After two major cyclones hit southern Malawi in four months, rural communities faced devastating crop losses and infrastructure damage during the leanest season of the year. In the aftermath of events like these, local leaders, government agencies, and global aid organizations need to know what’s happening on the ground in real time. Where is the situation most dire? Where will relief efforts make the most difference? And how do communities build resilience to withstand the next crisis?

“Data can answer these questions and save lives,” said Joanna Upton PhD ’15, a senior research associate in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management in the SC Johnson College of Business. “In fact, it already has.” https://bit.ly/4ldwTFU

Real-time data guided crisis response and empowered communities. Without funding, the program’s future is uncertain, a Dyson researcher says.
