Exploring the neurological complications of pregnancy

This summer, Fiona Lee conducted research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, investigating preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication and a leading cause of maternal and fetal illness and death worldwide.

Working in Dr. David Melton’s laboratory in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine, Fiona studied proteins in cerebrospinal fluid to better understand their potential role in the neurological complications associated with preeclampsia.

Her summer experience went beyond the lab. Fiona gained hands-on experience with research techniques, worked with patient samples, shadowed anesthesiology, and presented her findings in a final research poster.

Thanks to the Janet McKinley ’74 Family Grant, Fiona was able to pursue this valuable research experience while exploring a new city and making the most of her summer in Boston.

Meinig Scholar Jonathan Lam was recently featured by the United Nations Peace and Security unit as part of its “My Peace Series,” a component of the broader “Hear US” Campaign, which advocates for the inclusion of youth in peacebuilding and security. Jonathan is the first American and first youth of Southeast Asian descent to be highlighted by the campaign!

In May, staff from U.N. Youth Affairs reached out to Jonathan and referred him to U.N. staff for a spotlight on his activism in disarmament and refugee and migrant rights. In June, Jonathan was also elected as the youngest board member of Amnesty International USA and will be the first person to hold the organization’s youth board seat, reserved for individuals ages 18–24.

Every internship offers something new, but some change every single day.

"I'm currently in Denver as a Hotel Asset Management intern for a small, senior-driven hospitality real estate company. I would say I've enjoyed the unpredictability of the job. In just six weeks, I've done revenue reporting, market research, property underwriting, concept mapping for hotel restaurants, and much more. I particularly love how trusting the leaders are, and how they will give me and my coworker anything we can handle so that we can understand every part of the business." ~Buzmael Joanus

Internships like this give Meinig Scholars the opportunity to build real-world skills, gain confidence, and explore the many facets of an industry alongside experienced professionals. From analyzing market trends to contributing to hotel development projects, every experience helps prepare students for what's next.

Helping local agriculture bloom, one flower farm at a time. This summer, Meinig Scholars are turning their knowledge into meaningful community impact.

"I'm working with Madison County Cornell Cooperative Extension to connect with cut-flower farmers. The cut-flower industry (bouquets, displays, weddings, etc.) has begun to grow over the past few years, but there aren’t many resources available for growers. My internship centers around identifying the pests and diseases seen in the diverse flowers grown across upstate New York and creating informational resources. In Madison County, there's also a large Amish population, so an important aspect of my job is connecting with these communities and ensuring they also have access to resources." ~Anna Lovat

From supporting local growers to expanding access to agricultural resources, Meinig Scholars are applying their leadership and knowledge to strengthen communities.
