TODAY, April 17, at Cornell Cinema! 🎬
“COUNTED OUT” (2024)
🎥 🎞️ FREE Special Film Event
🕕 2:30pm
📍 Cornell Cinema, 104 Willard Straight Hall
🎟 🍿 Free admission + popcorn! Open to all!
🎤 Q&A to follow with:
⋅ Jordan Ellenberg (University of Wisconsin-Madison; A.D. White Professor-at-Large at ), who served as a consultant on the film.
⋅ Steven Strogatz (Susan and Barton Winokur Distinguished Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Mathematics, Cornell University)

COUNTED OUT (2024, 1h, 29min) investigates the biggest crises of our time through an unexpected lens: math. In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we have access to, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand or even notice. But whether we know it or not, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math—is a critical determinant of social and economic power.

The film is dedicated to Bob Moses, the MacArthur genius and civil rights leader who saw math access as the civil rights issue of our time, and whose work we follow in some of the last filmed interviews of his life.

Presented by the A.D. White Professors-at-Large Program at Cornell.
Cosponsored by the Dept. of Math.
Part of Cornell Cinema's "Campus Collaborations" series.

✨ Happy Quantum Day! | April 14 ✨
On this Quantum Day, we celebrate the power of curiosity and the extraordinary thinkers who have helped turn quantum theory into transformative technology.

We are especially proud to recognize Michel Devoret, an A.D. White Professor at Large at Cornell University, whose pioneering contributions to quantum physics have reshaped our understanding of superconducting circuits and quantum information science. His work—marked by creativity, rigor, and generosity of spirit—has helped lay the foundation for today’s quantum revolution.

In recognition of these achievements, Dr. Devoret and his colleagues were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics, honoring not only scientific excellence but decades of mentorship, collaboration, and leadership.

On April 14—chosen in tribute to Planck’s constant—we celebrate the science that challenges intuition and expands possibility, and the people who make those discoveries possible.

🔷 Today’s Keynote: Jordan Ellenberg on “Embracing Uncertainty”

Join us for a special ADW PAL x Math Awareness Month event with bestselling author and mathematician Jordan Ellenberg. He’ll explore how mathematical thinking helps us navigate a world full of ambiguity—and why uncertainty is something to understand, not fear.

Ellenberg is visiting Cornell as an A.D. White Professor-at-Large this week, April 13-17.

🔷 “Embracing Uncertainty” – A Joint Keynote Talk 🔷

Join us for a Joint A.D. White Professors at Large + Math Awareness Month Keynote featuring Jordan Ellenberg—a mathematician, New York Times bestselling author, and professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and an A.D. White Professor at Large at Cornell University.

Author of "How Not to Be Wrong" and "Shape", Ellenberg is widely known for making complex mathematics accessible to broad audiences. Through engaging writing and media appearances, his work explores how mathematical thinking helps us think more clearly about the world—and navigate uncertainty with honesty and humility.

In this keynote talk, Ellenberg challenges the idea of math as a source of perfect certainty and shows how real mathematical thinking—full of approximation, ambiguity, and honesty—helps us better understand an uncertain world.

📅 Tuesday, April 14, 2026
🕔 5:00 PM
📍 200 Baker Lab, Cornell University
✨ Open to all | Reception to follow in the Baker Portico

🎬 Also this week – Friday, April 10 at Cornell Cinema:
A screening of COUNTED OUT (2024)—a thought-provoking documentary exploring the role of mathematics in addressing societal challenges including inequality, climate change, democracy, and political polarization offering an empowering new approach. Ellenberg served as a consultant on the film.
🎟️ 🍿 Free admission + popcorn! Open to all.

🎤 Following the screening, join a discussion on the power of mathematics with Ellenberg and Steven Strogatz, Susan and Barton Winokur Distinguished Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Mathematics, at Cornell University.
