Cornell Seismic Design (CSD) designs, builds, and tests a scaled multi-story balsa wood tower for an international undergraduate competition hosted every spring at the annual meeting hosted by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). At competition, the tower is scored on a number of categories including architecture, model predictions, building revenue and costs, team presentations,

and most importantly whether the structure survives all three ground motions. Our team offers a great opportunity for students interested in all engineering disciplines, especially those focused in construction, structures, architecture, seismology and more, to experience the process of bringing a project from an abstract thought to a tangible product. On our cohesive team, students have ample opportunities to experience hands-on construction, learn several different applicable softwares, use a laser cutter, acquire leadership positions, and above all make a substantial impact on the final building!

We are excited to announce that we hit our $5,000 goal on our very first day of launch and we are so grateful for everyone's support! These gifts are already allowing us to experiment with new construction methods. We just increased our goal to $10,000 to continue this amazing progress and we hope you continue to share and help our project along this journey!

Hi everyone! This year, our crowdfunding campaign, “Advancing Earthquake Resilience”, will be launching on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST! We need your support in purchasing building materials, improving equipment like our shake table, and reaching our goal of bringing all team members to our competition in Salt Lake City this year. Stay tuned for our crowdfunding launch date next Monday and for now, enjoy our “This is Us” video!

Amrita Ramamurthy '19 is a senior who's been on the team all four years, two years of which she was Recruitment & Showcasing Lead. The Cornell Seismic Design team accepts all majors, not just Civil Engineering majors. Read below to hear what Amrita has to say about her experiences on the team.

"My favorite part of being on CSD has been working with people in so many different majors. As an OR major, in my classes myself and my peers like to approach problems in a similar ways. Working with civil, mechanical, computer science, architecture, and biomedical engineering majors has really widened my understanding of how many different ways you can tackle a single problem. "

It’s Cornell’s Giving Day and we need your support!! We have $345 and 23 donors so far with three hours left! We need funding for necessary team expenditures such as building materials and sending our building to competition, so we appreciate every donation we get.

Liv Morabito ’21 is our other construction lead. Read on to hear about what makes our team dynamic so special. Liv says:

“I joined the team first semester of my freshman year and it was an essential factor that guided me to what I want to pursue as a career. This team offers an opportunity to work with students from all years in an environment where all ideas are welcome and celebrated. As a smaller team, we are able to be more collaborative and work together on individual details of our project, which makes each team member feel like an integral part of making each decision. This project team has taught me that the best work comes from dedication, hours in Upson basement and communication with a few laughs."

Kevin Reyes ‘22 is another one of our new freshmen. Freshmen joined later than usual this year, so we held meetings specifically to explain our progress on the design and get their ideas and feedback. Read below to see what Kevin has learned through our design process.

“Since joining Cornell Seismic Design, I have been challenged to think in ways I have not before. Coming onto the team during the end of the design phase, the new members were able to partake in the conversation of how to go about the competition design. Though I already knew that I wanted to major in Civil Engineering, the design process really helped peak my interest even more as the intellectual challenge was something I really enjoyed, and it made a clear connection with class concepts into applicable ideas. I look forward to my future years on the team as I take more classes and have more to contribute.”

It’s Cornell’s Giving Day and we need your support!! We have 15 donors and over $200 so far. Help us reach our goal of $2500!

Franny Bard ’22 is one of our new freshmen. The relatively small size of our team allows all members to contribute to all aspects of the work we do. Read below to learn more about Franny’s experience so far.

“I really love being part of this team because it gives me the opportunity to meet and work with passionate and knowledgeable students, which means a lot to me especially as a freshman. The older members are always more than happy to answer any of the questions I have about the design process and programs we use. I learn about designing to withstand seismic waves, which isn't something I would be able to explore in freshmen classes. I also had the opportunity to travel to Vancouver to the international undergraduate competition and learn from other teams' designs as well. Being a member of this team has been by far my favorite part of freshman year.”

Dave Pineda ‘21 has been on the team for two years so far, and he looks forward to his next two! Read below to see what he has to say about his experiences on the team.

“Thanks to Cornell Seismic Design, not only have I gained practical knowledge in earthquake design that I would not have gained in a classroom setting, but I’ve forged strong bonds with the other members of the team. Later on, I hope to travel and apply knowledge I will have gained from CSD to projects around the world.”
