China’s economic reform started from the rural area. Three decades of highspeed economic growth and upgrade in industrial pattern has used up the premium resources and momentums granted by structural and institutional reforms. These comprehensive changes have created unprecedented opportunities while posed severe social issues for rural governance, integrated agricultural development, and preservation of sustainable ecosystem and natural resources. It is time to focus on rural issues again to explore the engines to power next round of reforms. The agricultural panel will concentrate on the integrated agricultural development and modern agricultural industry in China. Scholars and practitioners in agricultural fields will discuss a variety of issues related to sustainable agricultural development; modern agricultural industry, and technology transfer in food science field.
• Integrated agricultural development in China
• Chinese agriculture and food: driving factors and major trends
• Functional food and dietary supplement for health promotion: opportunities and challenges in food industry

Agricultural University
Norman UPHOFF - Director, Cornell Institute for Public Affairs

[Panel V: Emerging Markets and Investment]
April 19 16:00 - 17:20 196

China is transforming from a low -cost labor supplier to the world into a rapidly expanding consumerist economy. The exchange of capital and talent between China and the rest of the world is at an unprecedented level. Tremendous foreign capital waits to enter the Chinese market. Meanwhile, as the domestic economy starts to slow down, return-seeking Chinese investors are looking for profitable investment opportunities abroad. This panel will cover multiple topics, including business integration in China, liability and legal considerations of investing overseas, and the increasingly active cross-border M&A market.
• What challenges might these overseas companies who are willing to invest in China face?
• What strategies should they implement in response to Chinese government’s regulations?
• What obstacles should these cashed-up Chinese companies foresee in case of cross-border investment?

Speakers in Panel V:

Ming-Po CAI - President, Cathay Capital Private Equity
Harry EDELSON - Chairman & CEO, China Opportunity Acquisition Corporation
Jerry LOU - Managing Director, Morgan Stanley
Barry SINE - Managing Director of Equity Research

[Panel IV: The Next Wave of China's Philanthropy]
April 19 14:35 - 15:55 196

The last two decades have witnessed a rapid growth of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China. The establishment of Chinese NGOs is becoming increasingly popular as the necessity of providing private alternatives to solve social, economic, political, and cultural issues becomes prominent. As China is increasingly facing more internal challenges, such as basic education, public health, environmental protection and poverty alleviation, how to sustain China’s further development becomes the key problem for the whole society. A series of problems have arisen, which raises the concern of social responsibility and sustainability in the future. This panel will discuss the yesterday, today, and tomorrow of the Chinese NGOs, as well as examine the best possible path to confront these current and upcoming challenges.
• What is the implication of internal challenges politically and economically?
• How should the Chinese government manage these “soft” problems?
• In what kind of cooperation should the Chinese NGOs be with the mass media to urge the social attention?

Speakers in Panel IV:

Jose FERRAO - Executive Vice President, United Way Worldwidef
Yue YUAN - President of Horizon Research Consultancy Group
Xin HU - Director, Nonprofits in China Program, Harvard University
Weina Wang - Director of NPI Beijing
Jennifer TURNER - Director, China Environment Forum at Woodrow Wilson Center
