Cornell Performing & Media Arts - PMA

Cornell Performing & Media Arts - PMA The Schwartz Center is home to the department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University.

Cornell University’s Department of Performing and Media Arts (PMA) is housed within the iconic Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. The PMA program provides opportunities for students to explore theatre, film, and dance as distinct art forms, or to combine these disciplines in exciting ways. Whether students choose to major, minor, or enroll in select classes, they can integrate work in acting

and film, theatre and television, dance and light, new media and sound. The PMA major is both flexible and rigorous, giving students multiple options in designing their own program of study. In consultation with a faculty advisor, they also develop a focus in their area of interest. The departmental curriculum offers a robust selection of courses, from introductory to advanced levels, and from both creative and critical perspectives. Students can also study abroad thru PMA in Europe or work in the industry as part of PMA's Cornell in Hollywood summer internship program in Los Angeles. The Schwartz Center’s marble walls encompass all the elements needed for teaching and performance in theatre, film and dance: four performance spaces; dance and theatre rehearsal studios; scenery, costume and prop shops; sound and lighting design studios; and state of the art film editing and production suites. The Schwartz Center serves as a catalyst for the creative and intellectual endeavors of the many talented students, faculty and staff at Cornell. Students with varied interests—in criticism, film production, theatre, acting, directing, theatre and media history, screenwriting, dancing, film, media, sound design, lighting, costumes, multimedia work or international media and theatre work—can all find courses, productions, events, clubs and organizations, competitions and special opportunities at the Schwartz Center. All of the department’s activities build on a commitment to diversity and collaboration across all areas of the department, as well as across Cornell and the broader community. Also part of our department is Cornell Cinema, which has been cited as one of the best campus film exhibition programs in the country, screening close to 150 different films/videos each year, five nights a week in the beautiful Willard Straight Theatre. Each calendar includes an array of classic Hollywood and foreign films, independent titles, documentaries, experimental work, recent International cinema, silent films with live musical accompaniment, cult classics and recent Hollywood and arthouse hits, in addition to guest appearances by visiting filmmakers and faculty.

PMA Professor J. Ellen Gainor has written an article called "Susan Glaspell, Actor" for the journal Coup de Théâtre, published by the French academic society RADAC. The article appears in a special issue called Susan Glaspell: Past & Present.

“Scholars, myself included, have written extensively about Glaspell's work as a playwright, fictionist, and non-fiction author,” said Gainor. “But there was no scholarship on Glaspell's work as an actor, especially in the context of American performance techniques in the early twentieth century. My article discusses Glaspell's acting and the modernist performance modes that were emerging at the time.”

PMA Alum Gloria Majule’s play Possessed has been selected for The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s 2026 National Playwrights Conference, marking the first time a play by an African woman has been selected for this conference. Every year, innovative, unproduced works are selected from a pool of 1,400+ submissions by The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center to be developed with the support of a professional company of actors, designers, dramaturgs, and directors.

“I am overjoyed to have the opportunity as a Tanzanian playwright to workshop my play Possessed in such an incredible new work development conference,” said Majule. “It means a lot to me. The O'Neill is very competitive and has fostered so many great voices in the past that it is an honor and a privilege to be selected. It is also such a validation of my work and the stories I am trying to tell, stories that challenge African stereotypes and are written for the Black gaze.”

Additionally, Majule’s play Uhuru will be having a world premiere at Houston’s Alley Theater on October 27.

In the first weekend of May, a group of graduate and undergraduate students from Cornell University attended the Margaret Mead Film Festival, one of the longest-running and most prestigious showcases of ethnographic and documentary films in the world.

The festival trip also extended a thread of inquiry that had developed throughout the spring semester via a companion Exploring Ethnographic Film Series at Cornell Cinema, organized as part of an ethnographic film theory course taught by Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Performing & Media Arts, and Media Studies Affiliated Faculty, Natasha Raheja, who also organized the trip to the Margaret Mead Festival.

PMA Alum Joshua Bastian Cole-Kurz, Ph.D. ’22 had published an article in The Methuen Drama Book of Trans Plays Volume 3: Young Adult Edition called “The 'Ruhls' of Play: Mythical and Real Currents in Tyler Rocio Ecoña's Unfair Advantage.” Cole had previously contributed to The Methuen Drama Book of Trans Plays, Volume 2.

“My essay explores how Tyler Rocio Ecoña’s Unfair Advantage uses myth and fantasy together with documentary realism to illuminate the experiences of trans athletes navigating systems of exclusion in collegiate athletics,” said Cole. “Situating the play alongside Sarah Ruhl’s theatrical sensibility, I argue that Ecoña transforms contemporary debates about trans athletes into a broader meditation on resilience, advocacy, and the creation of inclusive spaces.”

One of the editors, Leanna Keyes, shared some insights about the three collections:
“We intentionally publish plays at all stages of development, from “has been reviewed in the New York Times” to “has had a single living room reading.” Almost all of the decision makers in our industry are cis, so we’re bypassing that particular stamp of approval to find juicy work that’s worth your time.

“In the editors’ intro to books 1 and 2, we talk about how we hope these anthologies help spur other publishers to create their own trans play compilations. We want more trans plays in more people’s hands, whether it’s our names on the cover or not!! If you’re an artist who has something to share with the world, or an editor who wants to bring together a fresh group of writers: start the conversation. You never know.”

🎉 Senior Spotlight: Caitlin Neafsey 🎉

Performing & Media Arts and English major

🔹What are some highlights of your involvement in PMA?
➡️ My biggest highlight was definitely taking the PMA 3000 Independent Study course for the Sundance Film Festival! I was able to travel with a group of students to Park City for the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and watch so many great films while also meeting industry professionals. It was such an amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone even potentially interested.

🔹 What are some favorite memories of PMA or of Cornell?
➡️ I’ve loved being in PMA because of the unique classes that are offered. My favorite memory from PMA was taking PMA 3503 - The Writer’s Room. This class gave me the opportunity to write my own original TV show series bible, and showed me that writing and development was a part of the entertainment industry that I could be successful in.

🔹 What are you looking forward to doing after graduation?
➡️ After graduation I will be working in New York City as a reporting intern for Page Six. I’m really excited to be in NYC and to start working closely with the entertainment industry! I’m also excited to live close to my brothers and my friends post-grad!

🔹If you could talk to your Freshman self now, what would you say?
➡️ Take lots of PMA classes, even if they’re not exactly the topics that you’re interested in. There are so many interesting classes, and you might love something completely unexpected.

🔹Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank?
➡️ I want to thank my parents and my brothers for all of their support during my four years at Cornell. I also want to thank my PMA professors and my advisors, Austin Bunn and Samantha Sheppard for all of their guidance.

In late April, PMA Professor Austin Bunn travelled to Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland to develop short film projects with Scotland’s unique Take Three program, which supports young filmmaker development through grants, labs, networking and workshops. He served as a mentor for six filmmaking teams at Take Three’s film incubator at a resort outside in Edinburgh. Later, Bunn went to Glasgow to give a public talk to 80 aspiring filmmakers about screenwriting for short films.

During the incubator, Bunn and the film teams spent three days exploring screenwriting craft concepts and short form filmmaking specifically. “I led a workshop for all the teams in narrative design for short films, based on my book Short Film Screenwriting. Then, I scrambled the teams so they could all meet each other and generate an original short film premise based on a new idea.... The filmmakers were incredibly talented with unique visions for their work, and it was just such a privilege and pleasure to work with them.”

🎉 Senior Spotlight: Veronika Makoviak 🎉

Performing & Media Arts and Government major

🔹What are some highlights of your involvement in PMA?
➡️ What is truly valuable and unique about PMA as an undergraduate program is its breadth: you can be involved in both theatre and film, learn theory alongside practical skills, and gain understanding into both the artistic and business sides of production. And, obviously, the depth of knowledge you acquire once you choose your focus. Anytime I stepped into the “real entertainment world,” I felt confident that PMA had equipped me with the skills and professional language needed to bring value to projects.

I began my journey knowing very little. I didn’t know what terms like AD or script sides meant. Don’t let that stop you - PMA students and faculty are there to support you at every stage of your journey!

🔹 What are some favorite memories of PMA or of Cornell?
➡️ Taking PMA 2800 was a truly transformative experience. We had students from all kinds of majors, and that brought very creative ideas into our acting pieces. Also, if you haven’t taken a course with Dr. Warner yet but want to learn more about the industry itself, run to take it!

🔹 What are you looking forward to doing after graduation?
➡️ I graduated in December. Currently, I’m taking a gap year before attending graduate school and working as a Casting Assistant at Magnet Originals.

🔹If you could talk to your Freshman self now, what would you say?
➡️ Start majoring in PMA as a freshman, not a sophomore. Make sure you gain professional experience in the industry as early as you can. It will inform your approach to classes, and you will have more specific questions to ask (your ROI will get higher and higher), helping you get the most out of your PMA experience.

🔹Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank?
➡️ To be honest, there are so so many people to thank! I especially want to thank Prof. Gainor, Prof. Palmer, Prof. Angelopoulos, Prof. Warner, Prof. Goelzer, and Alexa Alfonsi. And this list is far from complete.
