Still thinking about O-Week?

Last week, we welcomed the newest class of freshmen to campus! As we reflect on the week, we wanted to highlight the work the Brothers of the Alpha Chapter put in to ensure we continue serving our community through mentorship, guidance, and meaningful engagement.

From welcoming new students to creating spaces for connection and support, O-Week was all about helping the newest members of our community start their Cornell journey on the right foot.

Special thanks to Dr. Renee Alexander for her continued support and dedication to Black life at Cornell. Sharing space with a living legend gave our freshmen a one-of-a-kind opportunity to connect with Cornell’s Black history and hear firsthand about the experiences and legacy of Black students before us.

This summer, Bro. Colin Michael (A-SP24-4) worked at Morgan Stanley as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst. He returned to the Consumer & Retail Group in New York City, continuing where he left off with the team last summer.

Bro. Michael was able to spend 10 weeks working alongside Wall Street’s brightest minds, advising a diverse array of clients, and executing fascinating live transactions. He found it incredibly rewarding to learn so much so quickly, and he is grateful to have received and accepted to return Full Time with the team following graduation in 2027.

Bro. Christian Flournoy (A-SP24-3) spent his summer at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine (GUSOM) as a 2026 Fellow of the Academy for Research, Clinical, and Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES). As a fellow, Bro. Flournoy learned how to effectively integrate health equity into medicine while conducting research under Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, shadowing clinicians at community health centers throughout D.C., and volunteering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build and deliver beds to children in the DMV.

Bro. Flournoy’s research in the Cheema Laboratory focused on how Tumor-Associated Macrophages (TAMs)-Derived Factors Promote Pancreatic Cancer Progression Through EMT Induction and Metabolic Rewiring. Along with presenting his research via poster and presentation, Bro. Flournoy was also awarded the Trailblazer Special Award at the program’s conclusion for his leadership and intellectual curiosity.

Bro. Flournoy is also grateful to have spent time shadowing Alpha Chapter Bro. Dr. Gary Stewart (A-SP94-1) and Dr. Preston Stewart in their Orthopedic and Gastroenterology practices, respectively.

This summer, Bro. Jeremy Henderson (A-SP24-1) served as a Summer Research Assistant for Professor Chloe Ahmann, conducting archival research on the American Eugenics Society and Sierra Club to examine the intersections of environmentalism, race, eugenics, and body politics. He also traveled to South Africa and Zimbabwe with Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., engaging with the history and culture of both countries while strengthening his understanding of the global African experience.

Additionally, as an Alpha Chapter Alumni Association Fellow, he supported relationships between students, alumni, and visiting Brothers while helping plan programs for the upcoming academic year. Through these experiences, Bro. Henderson strengthened his research skills, expanded his global perspective, and contributed to the continued legacy of Alpha Chapter.

This summer, Bro. Tyler Japal (A-FA25-2) served as a Research Intern with the Cornell Ithaca Partnership Project, an initiative focused on developing a 10-year stewardship plan for the City of Ithaca’s parks through Cornell’s Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy.

Drawing on his experience at the federal and municipal levels, Bro. Japal worked with community stakeholders, including the Ithaca Youth Bureau and Department of Public Works. He also helped facilitate meetings with Ithaca residents to better understand community needs and priorities. Through comparative research, he contributed to developing a practical action plan to improve park maintenance and operations.

This experience strengthened his understanding of municipal public policy, and he looks forward to continuing his involvement with the project.
