Our Story
Dear Creative Writer, I am writing to tell you about an exciting opportunity to develop your gift for writing at one of the premier private liberal arts universities in the country devoted to excellence in the education of artists: Belhaven University in Jackson, MS. At present, Belhaven is the only Christian college or university in the country offering a BFA in creative writing and one of only 34 undergraduate institutions in total offering such a degree. The purpose of the creative writing program at Belhaven University is to develop the gifts and skills of creative writers, to impart a biblical understanding of what it means to be a writer, and to prepare students for service in fields as diverse as publishing, editing, newspaper and magazine writing, teaching, public relations, and advertising. We also expect our best students to be qualified applicants for graduate programs in English and creative writing. The many advantages of studying creative writing at Belhaven University include the following: • small class sizes (limited to 12 students in writing workshops) • consistent craft practice (colloquy writers’ group and workshops required each semester) • deliberate focus on practical writing experience—15 intern placements in the past 4 years (practicum and internship opportunities available in literary journal publication, newspaper writing, teaching creative writing, university press publication, and writing for business, government, and nonprofits) • thoughtful exploration of the theological and philosophical foundations for creativity, composition, art, and aesthetics • frequent opportunities for public readings and publication (47 publications, 44 awards, and 2 scholarships at the regional and national levels over the last 8 years) • unique location in a region known for its rich literary heritage (producing writers such as Angie Thomas, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, Elizabeth Spencer, Howard Bahr, and Willie Morris, to name a few) • strong mix of applied skill, writing workshop, and literature components in the curriculum • inspiring creative climate fostered by Belhaven’s thriving arts community (degrees offered in dance, theater, music, visual arts, film, graphic design, and creative writing.) If you have questions or would like to apply to the program, please call me at 601-968-8996 or email me at [email protected]. You also may learn more about Belhaven University and the BFA in Creative Writing through our website: www.belhaven.edu. The priority application deadline is January 31st of each year—students submitting writing portfolios by this date will receive priority consideration for departmental scholarships. If you are interested, please schedule a campus visit. I would love to treat you and your family to a meal and talk more about how you might grow as a writer at Belhaven University. Sincerely, Randall A. Smith, Ph.D.
