JSU Tiger Knights

JSU Tiger Knights Tiger Knights is Jackson State University's chess club. We meet once or twice a week during the school year to play chess.

Our officers are Henry Washington (President), Haley Thomas (Vice President), Marquez Arterberry (Treasurer), Te'Keyah Allen (Secretary)

Our primary advisor is Dr. Sarah Buxbaum, Assistant Professor, School of Public Health (Initiative), Jackson State University; Secondary advisor is Mr. Donald McWilliams, CPA, Instructor, School of Business, Jackson State University.

Maurice Ashley started playing chess at the age of 14, and by 33, he became the first African-American to achieve the title of Grandmaster. And now – he is the first African -American to be inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame.(April 15)

JSU Tiger Knights officers and advisors met today to think about events in Spring and Fall of 2016. We intend to meet more regularly this Spring with more "skittles" games (unrated) on campus. We will also schedule some rated tournaments and will host a scholastic tournament again this Spring with MSCA. JSU Tiger Knights' next meeting will be on Monday at 3 in the Student Center, first floor.

A year ago, in December 2014, JSU Tiger Knights held a small unrated tournament (picture below). In Fall 2015, we have held three rated tournaments and just co-hosted a scholastic tournament with Mississippi Scholastic Chess Association, with 34 players in grades K-12.
