Contemporary artist Jack Malotte (Western Shoshone/Washoe, b. 1953) has long confronted the environmental and political consequences of nuclear weapons testing on Western Shoshone lands. Focusing on Malotte’s works on paper from the 1980s, this talk explores how the artist brought together images of plants, animals, and desert landscapes with fighter jets, mushroom clouds, and fences. Particular attention is given to The End (1983), a vivid drawing that challenges portrayals of the Nevada desert as barren or empty while making visible the lasting effects of nuclear testing and military occupation. The talk also situates Malotte’s art alongside the anti-nuclear activism in Nevada in which he participated. The lecture will dissect the intricacies of the Native Western Shoshone tribe and the impact of American Nuclear testing on their lands and culture. The work discussed in this lecture will explore the direct cultural perspectives of the Native American peoples who have dealt with the fall out from the nuclear testing. Not only does this explore the damage done to our native lands, but also expands to the future of nuclear war and the cultural, political, and environmental impacts from that.

Eryn Oft, Distinguished Instructor of Music, performed with Oscar and Grammy winner Jon Batiste and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra under the baton of Jonathan Taylor Rush. The concert highlighted many of Batiste's greatest works, featuring music composed for the Disney and Pixar animated film Soul, as well as his piece “Freedom,” which was recently named one of the 250 essential American songs of the past 250 years by CBS News. Dr. Ashley Rattner, Associate Professor of English, has been awarded the 2026 Communal Studies Association Outstanding Article Award for her essay “Learning to Read Like an Abolitionist: Benjamin Lundy and the Early Antislavery Print Sphere,” published this year in Early American Literature. She will accept the award at the annual Communal Studies Association conference in Oneida, New York, this October.

Drs. Lindsay Holman (History) and Maureen McGuire (Art and Design) recently toured Italy and Greece with eleven JSU students. The tour was organized through EF Tours, and participants visited ancient and Classical sites like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Pompeii, the Acropolis, and Delphi. The students also enjoyed a walking food tour of Naples during which they sampled fresh seafood, bufala mozzarella, and, of course, pasta!

Associate Professor of English Christopher Douglas recently published a pedagogical essay entitled "Teaching with Birth of the Public Sphere: Pedagogical Approaches for a Glorious Revolution Classroom Coffeehouse" in New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century. This article explores teaching suggestions for incorporating a Reacting to the Past game into the core curriculum classroom, based off of student feedback from a class he taught the Spring 2023 semester.
