in Deaf Education is a “comprehensive” program accredited by the Council on the Education of the Deaf (CED). Pre-service teachers must be prepared for the diverse nature of students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Our philosophy is to respect and address diversity within the field by ensuring that all graduates are well-prepared and equipped for the challenges of educating all students with

hearing loss. Pre-service teachers in the program will learn a comprehensive and balanced perspective of students’ varying communication modes (sign and/or listening and spoken language), language and academic proficiency levels, use of assistive hearing devices (hearing aids or cochlear implants), family dynamics, and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Because these characteristics directly impact a child’s learning experiences, educational services, emotional development, and social interactions, it is of utmost importance that graduates of our program are experienced and adept in all of these aforementioned areas.

I (Dr. K) moved offices, which provided motivation to add several years of missing graduation pictures to my door!

UNF Deaf Education has been around for over 50 years, but I’ve only been here for 11 of those years. Since I joined the UNF Deaf Education faculty in 2015, I’ve celebrated the graduations of 68 teacher candidates - the final 9 graduates of the MEd program and the first 59 graduates of the BAE program. Most of those alumni earned a permanent spot of recognition on my door. (I missed a few who skipped out on commencement!)

I love adding new faces each year as we continue to expand the number of UNF Deaf Education alumni out there making a difference. Alumni, can you find your face on my door!?

This year, Deaf Ed and Exceptional Student Ed have started a new collaboration. The teacher candidates are enrolled in their Clinical Experiences courses together.

This is a great experience for our candidates to learn with and from peers who are in a wide variety of settings supporting students with a wide variety of strengths and needs. Since both programs are K-12 and result in a teaching certification that prepares them for such a wide range of positions and settings, intentionally expanding our candidates’ clinical experiences through vicarious learning opportunities is essential.

On Tuesday nights, the candidates in the BAE and MAT programs meet to participate in professional learning communities. Sometimes, the candidates from EDF 3945, EDF 3947, and EEX 6941 come together for part of their PLC time to create one large Community of Practice.

Last week, the candidates in EDF 3947 showed their professional portfolios, which are still a work-in-progress, to candidates in EDF 3945 and EEX 6941. Dr. K and Ms. Sturgeon love collaborating so that our seniors can mentor our juniors and MAT students because we know that sometimes peers can make the best teachers!

We officially kicked off Reading Buddies Fall 2026 this week. We love our partnership with Central Riverside Elementary School. Not only do our teacher candidates get the opportunity to get clinical experience in a Total Communication program setting, but they also get the opportunity to benefit from the rich history of a neighborhood school that is over 100 years old. 10 years ago today, we launched the BAE in Deaf Education, building on the 43 years of preparing TODHH’s at the graduate level. We couldn’t be prouder of the BAE program that we have built or the 59 alumni who have graduated.
