UNF Deaf Education

UNF Deaf Education UNF Deaf Education offers a Bachelor of Arts in Education, a minor, and a post-baccalaureate certifi The B.A.E.

in Deaf Education is a “comprehensive” program accredited by the Council on the Education of the Deaf (CED). Pre-service teachers must be prepared for the diverse nature of students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Our philosophy is to respect and address diversity within the field by ensuring that all graduates are well-prepared and equipped for the challenges of educating all students with

hearing loss. Pre-service teachers in the program will learn a comprehensive and balanced perspective of students’ varying communication modes (sign and/or listening and spoken language), language and academic proficiency levels, use of assistive hearing devices (hearing aids or cochlear implants), family dynamics, and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Because these characteristics directly impact a child’s learning experiences, educational services, emotional development, and social interactions, it is of utmost importance that graduates of our program are experienced and adept in all of these aforementioned areas.

Congratulations to our Outstanding Undergraduate Student, Mikayla Waters! When she was honored last week, Dr. K read these words: I originally wrote a statement in which I had gushed all about Mikayla’s academic excellence, leadership qualities, and humble, kind spirit.  I had planned to share details of her involvement as an ambassador in the College, a leader in our program, and research team member, as well as her participation in state, national, and international conferences in our field.  But today I got an email from her mentor teacher and knew I had to share this excerpt instead - Lauren Alex Chase-Boland wrote about her experience with Mikayla interning in her classroom, “As a veteran teacher, I felt a renewal, in my spirit, for teaching.  Her excitement and willingness to try new ideas and make lessons fun, engaging, and to rigorous for each content area inspired me to match that same level of enthusiasm!  Her leaving is bittersweet. I am so excited for her to start her own journey with her own students, but super sad to not have her knowledge, ideas and support in the classroom. I will forever be grateful that I took the opportunity to mentor her this semester!“ | ID: A photo of Mikayla on stGe holding her certificate with Dr. K on her right and Dean Dittmore on her left. Hey, we know her!

Mikayla is graduating next Friday with her BAE in Deaf Education. We are so proud of all that she has accomplished in her 3 years here, and we can't wait to see the impact she has on her Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the very near future!

Inspired by an early love of teaching and ASL, UNF spring graduate Mikayla Waters shares her journey in becoming an educator for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

We know her! Proud to call her a UNF alum! 🩷

We’re excited to feature PACS alumna, Brittney Campbell (MSDE ’24), who currently teaches pre-kindergarten at Clarke School in Florida. As a teacher of the deaf, Brittney is passionate about giving back to her community and supporting families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. “It is such an honor to watch my students grow, celebrate their progress, and see their language develop day by day. Every new word, every breakthrough moment, and every spark of confidence reminds me why I love what I do.”

⛸️ Hearing loss takes to the ice with 23-year-old Georgian Olympics ice dancer Diana Davis and her partner/husband Gleb Smolkin. Diana's bilateral sensorineural hearing loss resulted from an incorrect dosage of antibiotics at age two. Her coordination was affected, and the resulting safety concerns when performing jumps led to a switch from single figure skating to ice dance in 2016. Read Diana's story:
