Members of WRO collecting river water samples from a recent rainfall event in Moreau River Basin. Results showed total phosphorus levels greater than 4.0 mg/L as phosphate! Given that US EPA recommends flowing waters not exceed 0.1 mg/L phosphate, these results point to a critical need to reduce nutrient levels in Moreau River Basin.

A first-of-its-kind, eight-year study found widespread lead poisoning in bald and golden eagles across North America. Lead poisoning typically occurs when an eagle eats lead ammunition fragments lodged inside a carcass or in gut piles left behind when game is dressed in the field. In the past, evaluations of lead exposure rates and population impacts were only performed in small, localized studies. These findings are unique because researchers looked at the bald and golden eagle populations across North America using samples from 1,210 eagles across 38 states, including Alaska. Members of WRO installed a three-story tall (10 m/30 ft) climate monitoring tower at Alan T. Busby Farm this week. Notably, Busby Farm is Missouri’s largest organic farm nested within an experimental watershed study (EWS). The climate tower and EWS are operated by WRO and funded by USDA. We will be instrumenting the climate tower with a complete suite of climate monitoring sensors this year. We will be continuously monitoring all major climate variables, energy budget variables, soil variables, evapotranspriation, and carbon dioxide. There are plans to make real-time data publically available via satellite and/or wifi connection. Data collected will help inform farmers and watershed managers to promote soil and water conservation in Midwest US. These data will also be useful for current climate-smart research, extension and teaching activities. It’s an exciting time for students at Lincoln University College of Agriculture, Environmental and Human Sciences.
