Carson-Newman Counseling Department CSI is partnering with Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association to sponsor an upcoming professional development event titled "We Need Skills: A DBT Approach for Working with Young Adults". The training will take place on Friday, April 5, 2024, from 9:00am - 12:00pm at Laurel Church of Christ in Knoxville, TN. This event is FREE for all students! We encourage you to attend this incredible event to add to your professional skillset and support CSI.

The Carson-Newman Counseling Department is partnering with the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association this Friday, February 24th from 1:15-4:15pm for a Play Therapy training.

Dr. Carolyn Carlisle will be sharing her expertise for this event! The training is free for graduate students, and you must pre-register to attend.

Black History Month Counseling History Highlight

Dr. Kenneth Clark and his wife, Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark, studied how more than 200 children respond to a choice between a white or a brown doll. They found that children showed a preference for white dolls beginning at 3 years old and concluded that segregation was damaging. His work played a pivotal role in Brown v Board of education.

The Clarks were the first African-Americans to obtain their doctoral degrees in psychology from Columbia University. Kenneth Clark was the First African-American tenured full professor at the City College of New York, the first African-American to be president of American Psychological Association and the first African-American appointed to the New York State Board of Regents.

The Clarks opened their own agency in 1946 called the Northside Center for Child Development. This was the first full-time child guidance center offering psychological and casework services to families in the Harlem area. There they also continued conducting experiments on racial biases in education.

We would like to take a minute and welcome our newest faculty member in the Carson-Newman University counseling department!

Professor Jennifer Moralejo is a recent and wonderful addition to our team. In her professional progression, Professor Moralejo has spent much of her time investing in trauma patients through the development and direction of a counseling clinic at the Family Justice Center. In addition, she has also been an influential guide and role model to counselors-in-training which led her to pursue adequately training aspiring counselors to provide the best care possible. Welcome to the Carson-Newman Counseling Department!
