🪱🌱 Vermicomposting Workshop Success! 🌱🪱

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Vermicomposting Workshop yesterday!

Participants learned how vermicomposting can transform kitchen scraps and other organic materials into nutrient-rich worm castings that improve soil health, support plant growth, and reduce household waste.

Attendees gained hands-on experience with setting up worm bins to take home with educational resources to continue their vermicomposting journeys!

We also explored the importance of healthy soils and discussed opportunities for turning vermicomposting into a business.

A special thank you to Springfield Community Gardens for providing a welcoming space for learning and community engagement.

We appreciate everyone who took the time to attend and invest in sustainable gardening practices. We look forward to seeing how these new skills help participants build healthier soils, healthier plants, and healthier communities.

Lincoln University of Missouri's Horticulture Program was proud to partner in the development and establishment of this garden, helping create a space where fresh food, education, and community can grow together.

🌱🪱 Learn the Art of Vermicomposting! 🪱🌱

Have you ever wanted to make your own natural garden fertilizer but don’t have the space for a traditional compost system? Join the Lincoln University Horticulture Program for a hands-on Vermicompost Workshop and discover how worms can build your soil health while reducing household waste.

This free workshop will be conducted by Dr. Touria Eaton and Bleu Moore of Lincoln University of Missouri’s Horticulture Program and will cover:

✅ The basics of vermicomposting

✅ Setting up and maintaining a worm bin

✅ Managing food scraps and bedding materials

✅ Harvesting and using worm castings in the garden

✅ Tips for successful composting at home

✅ Soil Health

✅ Starting a Vermicomposting Business

Whether you’re a beginner gardener, an experienced grower, or simply interested in sustainable living, this workshop is a great opportunity to gain practical skills and the confidence to make your own vermicompost.

Best of all, everyone will take home their own vermicompost system including a starter bin, bedding, worms, and guidance to confidently continue vermicomposting at home! 🪱

🌱 Despite the stormy weather, the 2026 Gardening Fair in Kansas City, MO on May 19th was still a wonderful success! 🌦️🌿

Hosted in collaboration with the Lincoln University Kansas City Urban Impact Center, this event brought together community members eager to learn, grow, and garden—rain and all!

Presentations included:

- Garden Foundations: Soil Health, Layout, Raised Beds - Nathan St. Clair 🌱

- Container Gardening - Sophie Whyte 🪴

- Essentials of Vermicomposting and Budgeting for a Garden - Bleu Moore 🪱

- Essential Garden Tools Overview - Nathan St. Clair 🪏

Those who were able to attend despite the weather took part in a hands-on transplanting demonstration, where they learned best practices for successfully transplanting plants and then had the opportunity to put those skills into action themselves.

Participants went home with several vegetable plants transplanted into shiny new containers to help jumpstart their gardens, along with a copy of the 2026 Midwest Vegetable Production Guide to support them throughout the growing season.

By the end of the event, attendees left with not only plants and resources, but also the knowledge and confidence to grow thriving gardens at home. 🌱💚

🌱 Growing Local: 2026 Gardening Fair – St. Louis Urban Impact Center 🌱

Last Friday, the Lincoln University Horticulture Program hosted a Gardening Fair in St. Louis in collaboration with the Lincoln University St. Louis Urban Impact Center, AOA (Active Older Adults), and North Newstead Association.

We were excited to welcome 45 attendees for a day of learning, sharing, and growing together! Participants explored a variety of gardening topics through educational presentations and hands-on learning opportunities designed to help gardeners grow successfully at home.

Presentations included:

🌿 Importance and Principles for Raised Bed Gardening – Bleu Moore
🪴 Planning a Container and Raised Bed Garden – Irene Williams
💰 Budgeting for a Raised Bed Garden – Sophie Whyte
☀️ Summer Garden Planning – Sophie Whyte
🪱 Vermicomposting – Bleu Moore

Attendees also enjoyed a transplant demonstration led by Sophie Whyte and each went home with a tomato plant and the 2026 Midwest Vegetable Production Guide to continue growing their gardening knowledge long after the event.

🌱 Dr. Touria Eaton, (Associate Professor of Horticulture and State Horticulture Specialist at LU and Missouri SARE Co-Coordinator) and Dr. Waana Kaluwasha (Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology at LU) conducted the “In-Service of Education Training on Identification and Management of Vegetable and Fruit Diseases” in collaboration between the Lincoln University of Missouri Horticulture Program and MU Extension—and what a fantastic day it was!

Participants engaged in a wide range of informative presentations covering:
• SARE Programs - Dr. Touria Eaton
• Introduction to Plant Diseases - Dr. Waana Kaluwasha
• Diseases of Cucurbits and Tomatoes - Dr. Rebecca Melanson
• Diseases of Cool Season Vegetables - Dr. Nicole Gauthier
• Diseases of Small Fruit - Dr. Nicole Gauthier
• Developing Management Strategies for Vegetable and Fruit Crop Diseases - Dr. Mohammad Babadoost
• Plant Disease Diagnosis - Dr. Peng Tian

One of the highlights of the day was the hands-on diagnostic activity, where participants examined real plant samples, identified disease symptoms and signs, and worked together to recommend effective management strategies. It was a great opportunity to put knowledge into practice!

Attendees also explored a variety of valuable resources, including the 2026 Midwest Vegetable Production Guide, hand lenses for close-up disease inspection, and helpful literature on specific plant diseases. And of course, we can’t forget the fun, interactive game where participants discovered what plant disease they are based on their preferences and hobbies—it was a hit!

In collaboration, the LU Horticulture Program and the LU Caruthersville Outreach Center brought the Sustainable Gardening Fair to the Caruthersville Public Library , creating a space for the community to learn, connect, and grow. 🌱

Participants learned how raised bed gardening and regionally adapted crops can improve soil health, conserve water, support pollinators, and strengthen local food systems right here in the community.

Everyone left with tools to keep growing including pepper plants, tomato plants, and a kitchen waste compost bin to help turn everyday kitchen scraps into valuable soil.

One of the most meaningful impacts of the day is a brand-new raised bed community garden that LU personnel and participants planted during the event and will remain at the Caruthersville Public Library for all to enjoy and learn from.

Another highlight of the day was the resource walk featuring several booths filled with helpful information and materials for participants to take home and continue their gardening journey.

A special thank you to the Caruthersville Public Library for their partnership and for providing a welcoming space to make this event possible. We also appreciate their generosity in allowing us to share some of their photos from the day along with some of ours.
