Kenley Green, Quillen Honors Scholar, led an alternative break locally with Appalachia Service Project. The “Rebuilding Roots” alternative break was an effort to support the rebuilding of local homes due to Hurricane Helene, as well as learn about the destruction Hurricane Helene caused from several community partners. The projects throughout the week included painting, sawing, finishing projects, landscaping, and debris cleanup.

Chloe Campbell and Kaytie Hoxie, both GCS honors students, lead an alternative break that was focused on immigration to New York City. While in New York, the group volunteered at different organizations, gaining an opportunity to not only give back to both immigrants and New Yorkers, but to connect with them and hear their stories. The trip included visits to sites of historical and cultural importance, such as Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Tenement Museum, painting a picture of the role immigration has played in NYC. The group also met with organizations on the frontlines of migration work, such as the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and the United Nations. The group was even hosted by a church that was active in supporting immigrant communities and camped out in a side room throughout the week. They are excited to bring back what they learned about immigration in NYC back to Johnson City, TN! 🍎🗽
