"Today’s luncheon was bittersweet for me. Over the years, I’ve developed tremendous friendships with Sherland Hamilton, Mike Gibson, Charlie Kruse, and Randall Pope. These remarkable men have not only become dear friends, but they have also invested so much of their time, talent, and resources into our college and university. Their generosity, commitment, and unwavering support have made a lasting impact on students, faculty, community, and on the institution as a whole. I will forever be grateful for their friendship, and their leadership." - Dr. LaTour

College of Agriculture Grad students (Emily Culp and Rance Wagoner) are flagging the field area that will be used for the cotton fungicide study. This is a "real-world" application of experimental design topics they are taught in class - arranging field studies using the appropriate design to ensure accurate analysis.

CoA Graduate students in Plant and Soil Science. We are installing a weather station at one of our research sites at the Judd Hill farm.
(Students: Rance Wagoner, Lane Smith, Dixie Book, and Emily Culp). Research at this location includes scheduling the final irrigation in cotton, and variable rate nitrogen applications to improve cotton production efficiency. The weather station records environmental conditions in the area and uploads data from soil moisture sensors (to be installed within the next 2 weeks) to help us measure crop available water in our irrigation treatments.

Professor Bert Greenwalt’s Introduction to Agricultural Business class studied Arkansas State University history on April 30 and learned about the university’s agricultural roots. Created by Arkansas Act 100 in 1909, A-State was founded as one of four agricultural training schools. In 1925, the institution was named the First District Agricultural and Mechanical College. The A&M College arch was built in 1927 and is the oldest structure on the A-State Campus.

While touring Springdale and Bentonville on April 17, the A-State Agribusiness Club and advisor Dr. Bert Greenwalt met CoA alumna Dr. Savannah Wells at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. While touring the museum, Professor Greenwalt explained the agricultural policy context of Thomas Hart Benton’s painting Ploughing it Under. The title comes from the impact of the 1933 Agricultural Adjustment Act, the first U.S. farm bill, which included a program to raise farm prices by reducing crop acreage. Since some cotton acreage had already been planted by the time the legislation was passed, the program required a portion of these acres to be plowed under.
