Scientists from the five member campuses focus on agriculture and basic and clinical science research that will lead to health improvement, especially in the area of tobacco-related diseases. The Arkansas Biosciences Institute (ABI) encompasses collaborative research efforts of five institutions through agricultural and medical research in order to improve the health of Arkansans. The ABI was crea

ted as the major research component of the Tobacco Settlement Proceeds Act of 2000 (sometimes referred to as Initiated Act I), which was approved in general election by 64% of Arkansas voters.

Dr. Drew Fleming, associate professor of mechanical engineering, is co-editor of a special issue of the ASME Journal of Tribology which focused on orthopedics and biotribology, the multidisciplinary study of friction, wear and lubrication in biological systems. This issue collected 18 contributions ranging from materials development for implants to the contact mechanics of the human body. Dr. Cameron Wimpy, associate professor of political science and department chair, was selected by the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford as an Inaugural Fellow in the AI Upskilling for Social Scientists program, part of the Martin School’s AI Governance Initiative. Wimpy will study the relationship between AI and authoritarian politics and democratic backsliding. After online workshops, he will travel to Oxford in the fall for the program.

The designation is for individuals who have shown long‑term commitment to the Society and made exceptional contributions to the engineering management profession. Candidates must have at least eight years of ASEM membership and must show significant accomplishment in two key areas. Active ASEM Fellows make final selections after nomination reviews.
