Congrats to 3rd-year grad Caitlin Zachow for being selected for the 2026 NCECA Student Exhibition. Caitlin had this to say about her selection and time at WMU.

“It’s an incredible honor to be included in this year’s NCECA Student Exhibition, and with this being my third and final year of graduate school, the recognition feels especially meaningful. The program at WMU has been essential to the development of my practice; opportunities like this would not have been possible without the support and structure it provides. Through the dedication of the cross-disciplinary faculty and staff, the visiting artist program, the Morean Spring Residency, and the exceptional facilities, I’ve grown academically and professionally in ways I couldn’t have anticipated when I entered the program. Working alongside a cohort of graduate students and post-bacs from diverse backgrounds has created a supportive community that has allowed my research to expand and grow in new directions. This program offers a remarkable experience for those pursuing a personalized graduate degree in ceramics, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking both a broad range of opportunities and meaningful connections across the field.”

🐦‍⬛🦌 Introducing for the final time, another one of our third-year graduate students, the wonderful Caitlin Zachow!! 🦌🐦‍⬛

Caitlin is a third year MFA candidate, joining the program at WMU in 2023. Her work is about understanding life and finding meaning in it. Fascinated by the minutiae that fill our daily lives and come to define our experiences, her sculptural work focuses on themes of nostalgia and memory, with an overarching theme of storytelling. She received her BFA with a concentration in ceramics from Wayne State University, Detroit in 2021, as well as a BA in psychology. She has been a short term artist in residence at the Red Lodge Clay Center as well as a resident turned instructor with the Visitor Center Artist Camp in Ewen, MI.

🪾Proud to introduce Carleigh Reiffer as our First Year Graduate student!!🪾

Carleigh Reiffer is an emerging artist from Jacksonville, North Carolina, where her upbringing in a military family instilled in her a sense of exploration and adaptability. With a passion for hand-built sculptural ceramics, she honed her craft at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art, Craft, and Design, alongside a Minor in Art History.

Currently, Reiffer is embarking on the next chapter of her artistic journey as she pursues a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at Western Michigan University. Her work beautifully reflects the wonder of her childhood spent in the woods and her adult adventures in hiking and camping. Through her ceramics, she explores our deep-rooted connection to the environment, framing her artistic inquiry around a poignant question: What does it mean to be held? Reiffer’s art invites us into a dialogue about the nurturing embrace of nature and our place within it.

🥁Drum roll, please!! Now introducing our first year graduate student Rose Bogard!! 🥁

Rose, originally from Ann Arbor, earned her BA in Studio Art from Kalamazoo College in 2022. In the studio, Rose mainly works with found objects and slip cast molds.

“I enjoy dissecting objects, turning things inside and out and then finding new ways of putting them back together. My most recent body of work has taken on a new fold, turning to fabric as the object of investigation. The plasticity of clay when wet is similar to that of fabric in that it can be bent, folded, torn, and stretched. This material relationship continues to fascinate me as I explore new ways of manipulating fabric before transforming it into ceramic forms.”
