WMU Mentoring for Success Program

WMU Mentoring for Success Program The program is geared toward achieving specific academic and developmental goals that are focused on participants' overall development.

The Mentoring for Success Program is funded by the State of Michigan King-Chavez-Parks Initiative and WMU's Multicultural Affairs for Students and Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The Mentoring for Success Program is a peer mentoring program designed to promote program participants' success at Western Michigan University through increased acceptance rates into participants' intended majors and i

ncreased college graduation rates. Our peer mentors provide undergraduate students in our target population academic support through one-on-one and small-group mentoring sessions, during which they may tutor, facilitate discussions, help students locate resources, and promote academic and life skills development. Our program strives to ensure that all program participants are given the full opportunity to discover and develop their talents, interests, and unique potential, and to provide a learning-centered and student-centered environment that presents the context for intellectual, cultural, professional, and personal growth during the college experience. Program participants will learn to become independent, confident learners and develop good study habits and time management skills that will enhance their education and college experience, as well as to enable them to achieve a post-secondary degree. Interested in the program? Get more information on how to participate in the Mentoring for Success Program and review the list of eligibility requirements and application instructions. The Mentoring for Success Program is funded by the State of Michigan Workforce Development Agency's King-Chávez-Parks Initiative and WMU's Multicultural Affairs for Students and Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Participant Spotlight!

Aliah Ward, a junior majoring in biomedical sciences, began using our 24/7 online tutoring service and meeting with her mentor, Conor, in fall 2024. She has used 217 tutoring hours total to date, including 38.25 hours this semester alone. Way to go, Aliah!

"Using the tutoring program offered by Mentoring For Success has helped me immensely. Instead of spending lots of time struggling to understand content, I was able to access the 24/7 online tutoring website, where professionals could help me and answer specific questions. I really appreciated how knowledgeable and straight to the point the tutors were. Sometimes, they also provided additional resources to help me understand the content better.  I would definitely recommend these tutoring services to other students. Not only did this program improve my understanding of course content, but it also led to increased retention in the long run. Overall, I am very grateful that Western offers this service to students for free!"

From powerful reflections to moments of laughter, this conversation reminded us how comedy can be a source of resilience, critique, and connection, especially in challenging times.

A special thank you to Cravings Deli for catering the delicious appetizers, desserts, and boba. 🧋They were a hit!

WMU Mentoring for Success Program and WMU Office of LGBT Student Services are grateful to everyone who showed up, engaged, and helped create such a meaningful space.
