Western Michigan University Steel Bridge Team

Western Michigan University Steel Bridge Team We are a group of engineering students who come together to design, fabricate, and assemble a 1:10 scale steel bridge at an annual competition.

This competition helps Civil and Construction Engineering students develop valuable engineering skills by applying classroom lessons to a real project. In the fall semester we use structural analysis and CAD software to create a strong, lightweight bridge design. In the spring semester team members then learn how to use shop equipment to fabricate steel structures, including welders, saws, grinder

s, drill presses, and mills. After fabrication is complete, we bring our bridge to compete at the ASCE North Central Regional Conference with other universities around the area. Bridges are judged based on timed construction, weight, horizontal and vertical deflection during load testing, and display.
