Nolin Szafranski is the 2026 presidential scholar in electrical and computer engineering. Through pursuing an accelerated Master of Computer Science at WMU, he is opening his horizon to endless possibilities.

“I am interested in projects involving real-time processing, control systems or hardware acceleration,” says Szafranski. “As I grow in my career, I would like to take on more complex system-level design challenges and eventually contribute to architecting complete embedded solutions.”

Engineering and applied sciences Broncos are always striving for greatness, and we always love celebrating their successes! Upendo Bitaliho, a graduate student in civil engineering, was named as a 2026 Lifesavers Traffic Safety Scholar and attended the Lifesavers Conference on Roadway Safety in Baltimore, Maryland in April.

The Lifesavers Traffic Safety Scholars and Fellows program offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in the nation’s premier roadway safety conference. Bitaliho, along with 25 other students, attended three days of learning and networking with nearly 2,000 traffic safety leaders.

Bitaliho returned to Kalamazoo with extra knowledge and expertise, shaping the path she needs to move into the future. Congratulations!

Aimee Lambert is the 2026 presidential scholar in chemical and paper engineering. Lambert’s goals are clear: after an undergraduate career as an ambassador for the Department of Chemical and Paper Engineering, as well as a PEER mentor for underclassmen, and a member of Ts’ai Lun, WMU’s chapter of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, she has accepted a position as a process engineer at a towel and tissue mill with Kimberly-Clark.

“Longer term, I hope to step into a leadership role that oversees larger departments and technical teams and leads capital projects,” says Lambert. “Most importantly, I want to see myself in a position in which I am able to keep learning and growing, which I think is quite likely in the career path I have chosen.”

On Friday, May 1, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences held its second combined Induction to the Profession ceremony for the Order of the Engineer, the Order of Engineering Technology and the Pledge of the Computing Professional. Over 80 graduating students participated in the ceremony.

In addition to celebrating degree completion, a primary purpose for each of these ceremonies is to reinforce the professional and ethical responsibilities of graduates when applying their knowledge and skills. We're so proud of these graduates and all that they're bound to do on their professional and academic journeys. Congratulations to all of you!

Lily Kieliszewski is the 2026 presidential scholar in engineering design and manufacturing. Interested in roles such as design engineer, product engineer and process engineer, Kieliszewski found a surprising niche in the furnishing industry. She originally planned to focus on the automotive industry, but after an internship with Landscape Forms, her plan changed course.

“I look forward to being able to point at something in the future and say, ‘I helped make that,’” says Kieliszewski. “That goes hand in hand with my goal of wanting to enjoy what I do and having that feeling of purpose and happiness with my career.”

Tom Scott, B.S.E.’25, M.S.’26, watched his graduate studies literally flash before his eyes at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The aerospace engineering master’s student followed the glowing arch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on March 30 as it carried Transporter-16—with his payload, the Western Aerospace Thin-Sat, on board—into the ionosphere. Scott’s research now rests in low Earth orbit, where no Bronco satellite has gone before.

For Scott, the launch was a childhood dream become reality.

“Experiencing the launch alongside other engineers seeing their work go to space for the first time was unforgettable,” he says. “Growing up, I always read about planets and solar systems and astrophysics and things like that. I think all of that led me here.”

Dr. Simin Masihi, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, had an opportunity to take students from Semiconductor Fundamentals, a new course offered for our electric vehicle and semiconductor certificate programs, to the Lurie Nanofabrication Facility at the University of Michigan in April!

In this course, students learned about the fundamental physics of semiconductor devices, as well as the state-of-the-art CMOS process flows used in integrated circuit fabrication. Nine undergraduate students and four graduate students attended the tour.

"The students were especially excited to have the opportunity to visit this world-class nanofabrication facility," says Masihi. "We appreciate the support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in funding the semiconductors and electric vehicles certificate programs, which made this learning experience possible."

Nic Buccilli is the 2026 presidential scholar in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Buccilli will be returning to Boeing Vertical Lift in Philadelphia as a flight test engineer this summer and is hoping to transition into a full-time role after graduating in December 2026.

“I envision myself working on multidisciplinary, international test programs,” says Buccilli. “I am interested in test directing, organizing and directing flight test teams on site. My dream assignment would be completing a flight test engineering course at Naval Test Pilot School.”
