Our last executive board member to spotlight is our president, Sarah Saile!

Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sarah is a senior at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, where she is working towards a bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance and certificate in arts entrepreneurship. Saile has been a part of multiple student organizations at UMKC and has served as the president for the Conservatory Student Association (2020-2021) and the UMKC Clarinet Studio (2019-2020). Currently, Sarah is the president of the Emerging Arts Entrepreneurs organization, which she founded in 2021. Additionally, she is working as a student ambassador for the Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Aside from playing music, Saile has experience working with nonprofit organizations over the last four years. Before interning, she shadowed symphony administrators on the advising board for the Tulsa Symphony and Kansas City Symphony. Through this experience, she began her journey of active involvement with organizations not only within the arts, but outside of the arts community as well. Her previous internships include working at the Owasso Baptist Village Communities and for the Heartland Chapter of the Parkinson’s Foundation. Outside of music, her hobbies include doing taekwondo, hiking, and trying out local eateries.

Advice to students:
Take time out of each day to do something you enjoy and spend time exploring the city. School can get busy, so remind yourself why you are here working toward your goals. PS, if the opportunity presents itself, take it! You never know what people you’ll meet or the door that will open. Wherever you are, be present.

Up next on our executive board spotlight is our vice president, Powell Brumm!

Powell Brumm is an operatic baritone, director, and producer native to Tucson, Arizona. As a performer, he is dedicated to contemporary music and theatre, and is always looking for ways to reinterpret old works from the cannon in refreshing and meaningful ways for our present day. As a director, he finds purpose in creating intricate webs of meaning between characters, objects, and spaces to augment the world of our favorite stories. Some personal influences include the stories and worlds of Hayao Miyazaki, Quentin Tarantino, and J.R.R. Tolkien. A creative and generalist at heart, Powell fuels his work onstage and off with myriad hobbies and pursuits, which include piano, technical theater, photography, drawing, crafting miniatures, building furniture, among other things. Powell is attending UMKC working towards the Artist Certificate in Opera.

Advice to students: My advice to students and colleagues is to come up for air once in a while. I know the immense pressure to stay in the practice rooms for days on end is very real, but even pressure cookers need release valves! If the scales are blurring into each other, go find a new building on campus you haven't seen yet, get a coffee and take a minute to rest your mind and let everything sink in. Then go practice again. Also, go to everyone's recitals, you never know what you might learn!

The next executive board member to spotlight is our treasurer, Fasbi Yusuf!

Fasbi started playing piano at the age of 15 back when he was at home in Indonesia. His interest in playing piano immediately led him to learn music further at UMKC. Currently, Fasbi is working towards a Bachelor’s in Piano Performance. Fasbi is focusing on enriching his ensemble experience by collaborating with local musicians and performing with UMKC symphony and wind symphony occasionally. When he is not on the piano, he likes to spend time in the kitchen experimenting new recipes, or making classic homemade meals or baking goods.

Advice to students:
Don’t be afraid to try new things. Things and situations change, whether you like it or not. Therefore, some shifts or changes within your area of interest are normal and worth trying. I remember when I was a freshman I was so afraid of playing with other professional musicians and now, playing in chamber and collaborative music are some of my biggest motivations for practice.

Welcome back, roos! To celebrate, EAE is showcasing our executive board starting with our secretary, Bethany Stone!

Originally from the UK, Bethany moved to the US in 2011 with her parents and younger sister. She spent her high school years in Ohio where she learned her love for the clarinet and music. In May 2020, Bethany received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from the University of Akron. While attending UA, Bethany studied clarinet under esteemed clarinetist, Dr. Stanislav Golovin. She was a member of The University of Akron's Wind Symphony and Orchestra, both of which she was principal clarinetist of during her senior year.

Bethany is an avid teacher and has spent many summers supporting high school marching band camps as their clarinet instructor. She also currently has a private studio of around six to eight students that she teaches virtual clarinet lessons to weekly. Bethany is extremely passionate about teaching beginner clarinet students and being a part of their growth as a musician and student.

For the past two years, Bethany has been on the staff for Bravissimo Clarinet Academy. The festival was founded by Dr. Stanislav Golovin, and Emil Khudyev, and Bethany supported them by completing administrative tasks and coordinating the festival itself. Bravissimo Clarinet Academy will be holding their third season in January 2022.

Currently, Bethany is attending the University of Missouri Kansas City working towards a Master's Degree in Clarinet Performance. She is a member of the Conservatory Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony. After graduation, Bethany hopes to begin searching for a job in the Arts Administration field, and one day work for a major orchestra or non-profit.

Advice: Take every opportunity you are offered because you never know what it could lead to. Be a good human. Be someone that people want to work with and be around, be humble. Hold on, because it always gets better.
