Thank you to all of those who came to the Trans Day of Remembrance memorial and vigil hosted by UMKC LGBTQIA Programs and Services. Our President Kristen Garcia, and our Graduate Assistant Skyler Lucas, spoke to U-News about the importance of Trans Day of Remembrance, especially for our UMKC and Kansas City community.

If you are interested in LGBTQIA+ leadership opportunities please check out the MBLGTACC 2020 conference coming up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, February 14th-16th. Please like, share and invite people to take a look at the opportunity.

The event will be funded by our council, cost to and from Michigan and the hotel will be provided. Additional cost form participants will be money for food while we are down there.

If you are interested in LGBTQIA+ Leadership, please look into the up coming MBLGTACC Conference for 2020. This event will be held in Kalamazoo, Michigan February 14th-16th.

This event will focus on connecting, educating and empowering q***r and trans+ college students and faculty and staff through workshops, keynotes, entertainment, and social activities.

The application form can be found on Roo Groups by searching "LGBTQIA Affairs Council" or by using the QR Code attached to our flyer.

The LGBTQIA Affairs Council is seeking student leaders for the 2018-2019 academic year. All executive officer positions are available. Follow this link for a description of each position and the nomination form to either nominate yourself or someone you think is willing and able to lead. Nominations close Thursday, March 15th.

The Council's purpose is to provide a platform for LGBTQIA student organizations (UMKC hosts 5 other LGBTQIA groups) to work collaboratively to meet each organization’s objectives and foster a sense of community among students at UMKC. Attached is our constitution for more information about the purpose of our organization.

We hope you will consider joining us in advancing the role of the LGBTQIA Affairs Council at UMKC.

DeRay Mckesson is a civil rights activist and educator concerned primarily with issues of innovation, equity and justice. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, he graduated from Bowdoin College and holds an honorary doctorate from The New School.

Although he has worked on behalf of children and families since his teens, following the death of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Mo. in 2014 DeRay emerged on the national scene as a leading voice protesting police killings. As a co-founder of JoinCampaignZero.org, MappingPoliceViolence.org, ResistanceManual.org and OurStates.org DeRay has used social media strategically to connect individuals with knowledge and tools, and to provide citizens and policymakers with commonsense policies to ensure equity.

He has been named one of the World’s Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine, and one of the Most Influential People on the Internet by Time Magazine. DeRay also created and hosts highly acclaimed, Pod Save The People, a weekly podcast that provides space for conversation about the most important issues of the week, making sure people have the information they need to be thoughtful activists and organizers.

This event is free, open to the public, and seating is on a first come, first serve basis.
