We’re excited to announce a significant development in our ongoing commitment to better serve the KU community. On January 1, 2025, the KU Medical Center Alumni Association will integrate into the KU Alumni Association, creating one, unified resource for all alumni across all campuses.

“We couldn’t be more excited about uniting with the KU Alumni Association,” said Jordann Snow, director of alumni relations at the University of Kansas Medical Center, whose office manages the KU Medical Center Alumni Association. "Serving the growing alumni community is our top priority, and being one organization enables us to best meet their needs now and in the future.”

👏 Congrats to Jack T. Stapleton, MD’80, recipient of the Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award.

When Dr. Jack Stapleton began his career, the mortality rate for people presenting with an HIV diagnosis was nearly universal. But thanks to him and many other researchers, he’s seen that fact change dramatically over his career.

In 1986, Dr. Stapleton was tasked with creating the clinical HIV program at the University of Iowa. From the start, he sought to include his clinic in as many clinical trials as possible because of how limited the treatment options for HIV were at the time. By the early 2000s, many new drugs and therapies were available and patient survival rates improved dramatically, and the clinic’s role transformed alongside treatment options. Today, more than 96% of Dr. Stapleton’s active patients have non-detectable, non-transmittable HIV and are healthy, thanks to drugs and therapies that the clinic helped develop.

👏 Congrats to Mary Beth Warren, MS, RN, recipient of the Honorary Nursing Alumna Award.

One of Mary Beth’s main goals as executive director of KU Area Health Education Center was to establish a more robust approach to promoting health care careers across Kansas. She saw the need to assist middle and high school students in understanding what opportunities exist within the healthcare field, the academic requirements, and how to prepare. When she started this work, interest and support was minimal, but by her retirement in 2023, it was flourishing.

“Under Mary Beth’s guidance, rural students were given insights into healthcare industry opportunities, career pathways and educational requirements. She has been instrumental in empowering students to overcome challenges and pursue their aspirations.”

👏 Congrats to Mario Castro, MD, MPH, recipient of the Honorary Medical Alumnus Award.

Dr. Mario Castro has dedicated his career to bettering the lives of Kansans and Missourians as a clinician, but his reach is far greater than the Midwest region when it comes to research and service. He started his medical career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees. Today, he serves as the vice chair for clinical and translational research and director of the Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He’s also the chief of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at The University of Kansas Health System.

“I am humbled by the recognition. Not having graduated from KU, to be recognized by alumni for my achievements here reinforces why I came to KU in the first place.”
