The courage displayed by first responders continues to inspire public safety professionals across the country. Their legacy reminds us of the importance of service, preparedness, and commitment to our communities.
Today, we remember. Tomorrow, we will continue to serve by their example.

What is it Wednesday!
What are Challenge coins and how did this come about?

Challenge coins are specialized tokens that are given out to others to commemorate attending an event, signify acknowledgement of exemplary behavior, or being part of a unit, group, or task force.

Some theories trace challenge coins back to Ancient Rome where solders would receive extra pay for their courage in battle. This extra pay would be struck with the symbol of their military organization and the face of the emperor. Some soldiers chose to keep these specialty coins as souvenirs.
Other theories suggest that during the Victorian era special medal were minted to commemorate special occasions and given as gifts by the English monarchy to signify favor or attendance to these events.
During WWI special coins were minted by leaders of aircraft squadrons and handed out to its members. One coin was even used to prove its owners identity after being shot down, this assisted the service member with getting back to allied lines.

Another story tells of special units carrying the coins and challenging other to produce their coin and the individual not having a coin having to purchase a round of drinks for those who carried their coin.

In more modern iterations coins are given out by military, law enforcement, and other first responders organizations to commemorate special recognition or membership in the organization.

What is the Blue Envelope Program?

The Blue Envelope Program is a nationwide effort that started in Connecticut in 2020.
This program is designed to help provide a bridge between drivers and passengers who have Autism or difficulties communicating and law enforcement. It provides information to Law enforcement about the driver or passenger including emergency contacts. It also provides information to the driver or passenger about what to expect from law enforcement.

We want to make sure that all members of our community are safe and have a way to communicate their needs to our officers!

How is the money from traffic fines spent?
The fines from traffic tickets are distributed to various state programs as determined by the Kansas State legislature.

10.949% to the Crime victim's compensation fund
2.24% to the Crime victim's assistance fund
2.27% to the community alcoholism and intoxication programs fund
0.16% to the boating fee fund.
0.11% to the children's advocacy center fund
2.28% to the EMS fund
2.28% to the trauma fund
2.91% to the criminal information justice system
The remainder of the funds go to the state general fund

A-shift has started a new tradition to recognize officers who show dedication, integrity, and leadership.
MPO Blanchard is the very first recipient of this honor! He leads his shift in arrests and continues to serve our community as an FTO, RAD instructor, and Active Shooter Instructor.
After facing a potentially career-ending surgery last year, his incredible resilience and positive attitude make this comeback truly worth celebrating.
Thank you for your service and leadership, MPO Blanchard!

On August 14, 2026, Chief Brad Deichler conducted an awards presentation during the daily shift briefing to recognize officers whose actions exemplified the highest standards of service and dedication.
These officers were honored for their commitment to keeping our community safe and for going above and beyond their normal duties when situations required immediate action and decisive response.
We are proud to recognize their professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering dedication to public safety. Thank you to these officers for all you do to protect and serve our community each day. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated.

What is it Wednesday!
Blue-phones
Are a safety device on campus that you can use to get in direct contact with KUMCPD dispatch. Pushing the red button will call our dispatch center and an officer will be immediately dispatched to your location. Many of our blue phones have cameras attached to them as well so officers and dispatchers can see what’s going on around you when the phone is activated.

Blue phones are another way KUMC PD is keeping our community safe!

On 07/31/2026 Tyler Trusskey of Boy Scout troop 304, completed his Eagle Scout project.

As part of his project he collected and retired 104 national and state flags from around the Kansas City community to honorably retire. Two of those flags were from KUMCPD.

When KUMCPDs flags became too worn out to respectfully display we contacted Tyler and asked if he would retire them in an honorable and dignified manner. Tyler came to our department and was presented the flags along with a department challenge coin.
Tyler then took the flags and used them with other flags from across our community and gave them one last sign of respect for our country before being retired.
As part of his project he has created flag retirement boxes that will be placed at Maywood church, Sam's Club, and KCKFD to collect flags for future retirement ceremonies.

Thank you Tyler for all your hard work!

Congratulations to Ofc Owen Corpuz, KUMCPD's newest officer to graduate for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center!
Officer Corpuz has completed 14 weeks of training at the academy and will now begin 14 weeks of field training on KUMC's main campus!
Congratulations Ofc. Corpuz! We look forward to seeing you around campus!
