The students of the UMKC Tuba and Euphonium Studio hail from throughout the United States; most commonly from the Missouri area (Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee) as well as Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, South Carolina, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Kyoto, Japan. Students are involved in a variety
of majors: Performance, Music Theory, Music History, Composition, Music Education, Music Therapy, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Master of Arts, Master of Music Performance, Master of Conducting, Master of Composition, Master of Music Education, Master of Music History and Literature, Master of Music Theory, Master of Music Therapy, DMA in Conducting, DMA in Performance, PhD in Music Education. In addition to the major instrumental performing ensembles - Conservatory Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble, Conservatory Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Band, Music Nova (contemporary music ensemble) - students are strongly encouraged to participate in a wide variety of musical organizations: jazz combos, brass quintets, tuba quartets, choral ensembles, commercial ensembles, et al. All students perform each semester, most presenting full recitals each semester. Students are expected to perform at a high level of competence. Thus, the students are highly active in competitions: approximately 85% of the studio participates in state, regional, national and international solo and chamber ensemble competitions. The euphonium and tuba students have distinguished themselves off the stage as well as on. Students have won many academic awards including the Chancellor's Scholar Award, Bright Flight Scholar, Dean's Fellowship, and have presented at clinics and conferences including the CMS Great Plains Chapter, Rocky Mountain States International Tuba-Euphonium Association Regional Conference, and the Great Plains Tuba Euphonium Conference.
