Blackboard Mobile is a special version of Blackboard that is optimized for smart phones and other mobile devices. In the past, the app has been free to UMKC students and faculty, but – because of a deal between Blackboard and Sprint – it was only available to people with Sprint as their mobile carrier. Starting September 10th, Blackboard mobile will be available for users with any carrier, not just Sprint. However, with this change, Blackboard will begin charging a small fee to download the app: $1.99 for an annual license or $5.99 for a lifetime license.

This license is portable, so students who transfer or take classes at more than one university will be able to continue using Bb Mobile at no extra charge. Current Mobile users will be prompted to download the new version on the date of the changeover, while others will find the new version in their device’s app store. The new app is available in both Android and iOS versions; unfortunately, Blackberry and WebOS will no longer be supported.

For more information or assistance, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 816-235-6700 or [email protected].

FS2012 course sites will become available to students on Monday, August 13th. If you don't see one of your courses listed, double-check your registration on Pathway. If Pathway shows that you're registered, then what's likely happening is that the instructor has hidden the course site; they may still be working on it or they may not be planning to use Blackboard at all. If you have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to call us at 816-235-6700 :-)

Summer semester course sites are now open to students. If you are a student and do not see a SS2012 class in your 'My Courses' list, first check Pathway to verify that the course shows in your online schedule. If you see the course in Pathway but not in Blackboard, and if it has been AT LEAST 48 hours since you registered for the course, please call the ITS Help Desk at 816-235-6700 to check for problems with your Blackboard course feed.

If you are having problems logging into Blackboard right now, especially from off-campus, it appears that network problems are preventing connection to a number of UMKC resources -- including Blackboard, Moodle, and UMKC web pages. Staff are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Faculty: A new tool called 'CourseSmart' has just been added to Blackboard. This tool connects Blackboard with material provided by 20+ academic publishers. If all you use it for is to provide a link to your course text, this allows students to buy or rent the e-book version for significantly less than they'd spend to buy the text at the bookstore -- often saving 50% or more. You can also publish links to specific chapters or pages with your own notes and comments, access supplementary materials from the publisher to expand on the text material, etc. Keep an eye out for an announcement in the next ITS newsletter or contact the ITS helpdesk at [email protected] for more details.

Internet Explorer users: IE9 is *not* yet certified for use by Blackboard. IE9 causes many tools in Blackboard to work incorrectly, as well as causing major hiccoughs in other tools like Voice Boards. If you are going to upgrade to IE9, you need to plan on using Chrome or Firefox for Blackboard for the next few weeks to months. Since Microsoft does not give Blackboard Inc. early access to new IE versions, Blackboard can't start working on patches to fix issues with then until after the new version is released to the public.

A number of off-campus users are having difficulty accessing Tegrity podcasts through Blackboard. ITS staff are working to identify the cause of the problem right now. In the meantime, if you have trouble viewing course podcasts from your class Bb site, please go directly to http://roocast.umkc.edu/ and sign in with your normal SSO username and password. This should give you access to all of your podcasts.

Fall semester course sites will be removed from the Blackboard server on Tuesday, 2 February. Course content and settings will be backed up and archived prior to this deletion date. As always, these sites' content will remain available to instructors who wish to re-use materials in the future (via the Request System tab's "Course Copy" tool.) In special cases where faculty have made *prior* arrangements for leaving FS2011 sites intact, these sites will remain active on the production Blackboard server for the duration of need. If additional information is needed, please telephone the ITS Help Desk at 816-235-6700.

Blackboard is also pulling the plug on Bb Scholar, the Blackboard-integrated social bookmarking tool. One of their selling points to encourage Scholar use was the promise that users would have lifetime access to their bookmarks. The status of that promise is unclear at the moment.

Blackboard notified us this afternoon that they will be eliminating Blackboard Learn for Facebook on 30 September. Apologies for the short notice. If you are a user of the Bb Facebook app, you may want to try the Blackboard Learn Toolbar for IE, instead. Please contact ITS at 816-235-6700 for more information.

Does your class use Tegrity podcasts? If you have an iPhone or iPad, there is a new Tegrity Mobile app that you can download free from iTunes that makes viewing course podcasts a breeze!
