From Oʻahu to the neighbor islands…This month on Howzit, VCAA Barkhoff is busy with graduation season in full swing. From celebrating with our grads on campus to traveling across the islands to recognize our neighbor island students, this episode is all about community, accomplishment, and the journeys that brought our students here.

Congratulations Class of 2026! We see you, we celebrate you, and we can’t wait to see where you go next!!

A lot of you recently found our page through Ashley’s lei-making videos. 👋 Welcome to ACM at UH West Oʻahu. Last week, many of the students behind the projects, stories, designs, films, and yes…even the lei, graduated.

In Hawaiʻi, lei is more than decoration. It’s celebration, care, community, and connection. And in many ways, that spirit reflects what creative media is all about too. We create things that bring people together.

As we head into summer, we’re excited to keep sharing the work of our students and alumni. And of course! MORE TUTORIALS!!! 🤔 let’s us know in the comments below what you’re interested in seeing.

Trauma bonding is low-key part of the capstone experience 😅 That’s a wrap on the semester

Finals week is up next! Good luck to all our senior students as they bring it home! Interested in learning more about this experience, click on our bio. 🔝

Some stories look simple on screen until you see what it takes to make them. Senior capstone student, Macien, is producing a series on the uniqueness of Kauluhauweo, a UH West Oʻahu’s peer mentorship program by capturing the relationships, the in-between moments, and the impact that doesn’t always get documented.

His Day in the Life shows the other side of that work. The planning. The setup. The shooting. The editing. Doing it solo. All the DETAILS!

Because storytelling like this isn’t just about pressing record. It’s about intention, care, and the time it takes to do it right.

What does it mean to be digital? Kaua’s capstone explores the idea that identity is no longer singular. Through her research on digital identities, she asks a simple but unsettling question: Are we the same person online as we are in real life—or are we becoming something else entirely?

Her project invites participants to step into that space. Through a survey, individuals imagine themselves as a “digital superhero”—defining their traits, behaviors, and presence in a virtual world and then reflect on how that version compares to who they are offline.

The gap between the two is where the work lives. It’s not just about avatars or profiles. It’s about how devices, platforms, and constant connectivity are shaping a parallel lived experience; one that influences how we think, present ourselves, and move through everyday life.

Kaua’s work challenges us to reconsider:
1 - What is identity now?
2 - How much of it is constructed?
3 - And what happens as a generation grows up never knowing a world without this digital self?

It’s Complicated…Students, what type of relationship do you have with your desktop/laptop? 👀

Is it:
Long-term committed? We’ve been together since 12th grade.
Toxic but passionate? It crashes at 2am but I still can’t leave.
Professional partnership? It’s all business. Deadlines only.
Situationship? I ignore it… until finals week.

Your laptop has seen your moments. 👀 Our devices aren’t just tools. They’re collaborators. Witnesses. Co-conspirators.

Drop your relationship status below!
