The University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu Bachelor of Applied Science, Health Professions, General Health Science (BAS-HP, GHS) concentration with a Pre-Nursing Pathway was designed to address the nursing shortage in the state of Hawaiʻi, specifically the westside of Oʻahu, and aims to develop and prepare scholarly leaders from west Oʻahu who are interested in improving the health and wellness of their community through a career in nursing. Your generous contribution will directly impact the lives of our talented and highly qualified students studying to be the next generation of healthcare workers caring for our Hawai'i community!

Three special people had a dream for the students and community of UH West Oʻahu. They dreamed, then made it come true with the generous funds awarded by the Title III UHWO PIKO grant. Sadly, the grant came to an end on September 30, 2021. This video cannot express enough thanks for the PIKO grant and the powers which made it a reality as the contributions and benefits are significant and positively affected so many lives. Although the Nāulu Center programs, student workers and staff supported by the grant move on, the spaces remain and the spirit of the experiences, connections and relationships continue on. Thanks to PIKO, more are enriched and carry on the mindset that making dreams come true is not just for fairytales.

The grant was founded upon the Hawaiʻi Papa O Ke Ao goals, to help foster indigenous well-being. The funding grant was awarded and realized from the joint efforts of Melissa Saul, brilliant grant writer along with Dr. Rockne Freitas and Dr. Lui Hokoana. Their collaborative efforts were successful in making their dream come true for UH West Oʻahu. In addition to the resources and programs created, the PIKO grant facilitated the spaces listed below:
* Nāulu Center - rennovation
* Hale Kūahuokalā
* Hoʻonanea & Hoʻokipa study spaces
* Nāulu Center Outdoor Learning Space
* UH West Oʻahu Fitness room
* Nursing Sim Lab

PART 1 - It begins - A Tribute to the PIKO grant - What is the PIKO grant and how so many have benefited from it? Shall we begin to count the ways it has contributed to our UH West Oʻahu community? In addition to funding the renovation of what is the Nāulu Center, it gave us the Hale Kahuokalā, the Nursing Simulation Lab, the Fitness Center and the new Outdoor Learning Space and more. So many things made possible and so many are grateful.

Summer is over and school is back in session this Fall Semester 2021 at UH West O'ahu. Yes, life is different with the new safety mandates but push on by remembering "why" you're there. Here's what works for me. Jus' Sayin' - Hope this helps. See you on campus! Take care and stay safe.
