Daniel Alenquer, Director of the School of Visual Communication Design, recently spoke Jeanne Destro at WAKR Radio to talk about our newest major, the user experience design bachelor's degree. Here's their conversation:

From the touch screen on your phone, to the "Popcorn" setting on your microwave; there's somebody, somewhere, who had to figure out how to make that work for you, and hopefully; how to make it work in such a way that the experience was seamless, satisfying, and really served your needs.....

It was an exciting day with many interesting topics on discussion, and it was great to have so many visitors from more than 40 schools and districts. Our students learn tech at a professional, career ready level and we showcased that at CTE Day.

On the night of May 24, 1978, Kent State student Judy Martins left a costume party in Dunbar Hall at 2:30 a.m. to return to her dorm, Engleman Hall. She was never heard from again.

The story of this cold case fascinated three current students in their Documentary and Journalism class in Spring of 2025. Journalism majors Adriana Gasiewski and Kayla Gleason and Digital Media Production major, Alex Tosko, reached out to reporter Dave O'Brien, who had been covering the case. After a pre-interview conversation with O'Brien, they pitched Judy's story to their professors who greenlit their documentary.

"What Happened to Judy Martins?" follows O'Brien and Judy's siblings, Steve Martins and Nancy Baer as they continue to investigate the disappearance.

Now the students' documentary will air Friday, August 22 at 9:00 p.m. on PBS Western Reserve's Local Focus program along with short interviews with the student documentarians.

Check out the link in bio for where you can watch Local Focus.

International travel provided Mark ('74) and Paula Nylander the opportunity to experience different cultures, traditions and lifestyles – and it also gave them a greater appreciation for the U.S. But when they were students, the costs of study abroad were out of reach for them. They wanted to help make those experiences more affordable for students today by establishing the Mark & Paula Nylander Scholarship for Global Studies.

Donor Profile: Mark and Paula Nylander School of Media and Journalism | Mark and Paula Nylander recognize the value of study abroad for the young people, believing that experiencing other cultures through education is vital to a greater understanding of the world around us. This belief helps drive t...

Our Emerging Media and Technology students who took the Interdisciplinary Projects course in the fall were working on the cutting edge of 3D video capture technology. In collaboration with the Kent State University School of Theatre and Dance and Kent State Design Innovation, they created a memorable video experience for that semester's dance recital.

As Project Leader John Comi said "What traditional photography did for communication and information, volumetric video like Depthkit could very well transform the world even more radically."
