Happy ! 🛰️ 🦈

On Saturdays we share updates from sharks carrying satellite tags, small devices attached to the dorsal fin of sharks that help us understand where sharks go and how they use coastal and offshore habitats.

Satellite tags allow us to:
    •    Track shark movements in near real time
    •    Identify migration routes and habitat connectivity.
    •    Better understand how sharks move between nursery areas and offshore waters

This week’s update features a juvenile female tiger shark, tagged in April 2026! She is currently giving us lots of data about her habitat use! 🐅🦈

Want to support this work? You can adopt a satellite-tagged shark, name it, follow its movements, and directly contribute to shark research and conservation.

Surprise! These hitchhiking fish enter manta rays’ butts 🪸

Led by PhD candidate Emily Yeager, in collaboration with and , our new paper in Ecology and Evolution documents remoras entering manta ray cloacas—the opening used for waste excretion and reproduction—as well as their gill slits.

Celebrating our Spring 2026 Master of Professional Science graduates 🎓🌊

This cohort worked on a wide range of projects—from using drones to study marine megafauna, to examining shark physiology, to exploring fish communities and species interactions in Biscayne Bay.

We are so proud of Kim, James, Katherine, and Amber for all of their hard work in the field and beyond. Excited to see what’s next for each of you 🦈

🎓 Celebrating our Spring 2026 Undergraduate Seniors!

From long days on the water to hands-on research and data collection, this group has been an important part of our work in South Florida.

Throughout their time with SRC, these students contributed to a wide range of projects—supporting field research, lab work, gear maintenance, and outreach!

We’re proud of all they’ve accomplished and excited to see where they go next.

Happy !

This week’s tagged shark is a great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokkaran)! Thanks to satellite telemetry, we can follow her movements in near real-time—revealing where she travels, how she uses habitat, and how these patterns shift over time. These data are critical for identifying important habitats, informing conservation, and improving management decisions.

💙Want to support this work? Great Hammerhead “A” is available for adoption. Your adoption helps fund the cost of satellite tags and transmissions, directly supporting shark research and conservation.

When you adopt, you can:
🦈Name your shark
📍 Track its movements in near real time on our website
📜 Get a personalized adoption certificate

New paper published today in Frontiers in Marine Science led by SRC PhD Candidate .bio.john!
Marine nurseries are critical for the survival and growth of young animals, but identifying and protecting them isn’t always straightforward. In this paper, we propose a new, tiered framework that helps managers approach nursery conservation even when data are limited, scaling protection based on risk and evidence.

Meet the remora 🐟
The ocean’s ultimate hitchhiker.

Clinging to sharks, rays, turtles, and even boats, these sleek fish use a built-in suction disc to catch a free ride and conserve energy while cruising the seas. In return? A little cleanup crew action, snacking on parasites and leftovers along the way.

At SRC, we’re studying this relationship 🧐
From when and where remoras attach to how they may influence shark movement and behavior, our team is uncovering the hidden impact of these tiny tagalongs.

Turns out, the smallest riders might have the biggest story.
