University of Rhode Island CERT University of Rhode Island Community Emergency Response Team (URI CERT)

During times of emergency, communities can benefit from the help of volunteers, but volunteers that are not properly trained are at a higher risk of becoming victims themselves. The University of Rhode Island Community Response Team (URI CERT) is addressing this concern by training members of the campus community to be prepared for dealing with emergency situations so that trained volunteers will

be readily available when needed. The training provided will not only benefit the community, but will also equip individual members with personal safety knowledge in times of emergency.

**No previous emergency experience is needed--merely members of the campus community who would like to be called to volunteer their time during an emergency situation.

Have you taken time to make a Plan?!

If not, here's what to do!

Focus on all hazards when planning for emergencies. For example, when planning for a hurricane –take into consideration what will result from that event such as high winds and the potential for flooding - don’t just plan for the hurricane itself. Be sure to plan according to the region you’re living in. Don’t plan for a hurricane if you live in Nevada!

Find out from your local community how you will be notified of man-made and natural disasters.

Talk with your friends, family and neighbors to tailor your plan. Be sure to include special considerations when planning for the care of pets, family members with access and functional needs, and know how to safely shut off utilities.

Ask at your work and school what emergency plans they have in place. Discuss all of this information with your family and decide how you will all react should an emergency arise. Also plan for alternative methods to contact one another and set a location where you will all meet should a disaster arise.

Check out ready.gov for more information!
