URI CON had the opportunity to connect with 73 community members at the Narragansett Indian Pow Wow, sharing higher education resources and connecting with prospective students interested in nursing and other pathways.

Meet Dr. Ann Marie Moraitis, PhD, MS, RN—Assistant Professor in the URI College of Nursing, nurse scientist, and researcher dedicated to improving the lives of adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.

With expertise in cancer survivorship, caregiving, end-of-life care, clinical exercise physiology, and cancer rehabilitation, her research focuses on how personalized, accessible physical activity interventions can reduce symptom burden, improve quality of life, and promote long-term health after cancer.

At URI, Dr. Moraitis founded a Young Adult Cancer Advisory Board to ensure survivors’ voices guide every stage of her research. She leads and collaborates on projects examining physical activity, symptom management, and cognitive health (“brain fog”) in young cancer survivors, while working with national and international research teams to advance exercise oncology and develop innovative, sustainable approaches to supportive cancer care.

Inspired by the experience of a close friend with cancer, Dr. Moraitis is driven by a mission to ensure every young cancer survivor has access to the knowledge, resources, and support needed to improve their health, well-being, and future after cancer. 💙🔬

PHD candidate, Ella Cullen has recently been awarded:

Brown LEND Fellowship: Ella Cullen, PhD Candidate in Nursing, was selected as a 2026–2027 Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Fellow at Brown University Health.

She also received research grant assistance from: The Nursing Foundation of RI and the International Association for Human Caring for her work to support her dissertation research on examining stress and coping among parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Six URI Nursing Pathway students recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. alongside our Pathway Program Director, Janelle Amoako and other RI members of ANA, to attend the American Nurses Association (ANA) Membership Assembly.

During the conference, students witnessed firsthand how nurses advocate for the future of the profession. They learned about key legislative priorities, including recognizing nursing as a profession, addressing workplace violence through comprehensive prevention and response plans, and protecting funding that supports nursing education and the next generation of nurses.

One of the most impactful experiences was meeting with Rhode Island senators and representatives, where our students courageously shared their personal stories and explained how these issues have affected them and their journey into nursing. Their voices helped bring real-life perspectives to important conversations shaping healthcare policy.

Students also observed the ANA’s governance process, including bylaw discussions and member voting. They even stepped up to the microphone to share their own ideas with nursing leaders from across the country. We couldn’t be prouder of their confidence and leadership.

Beyond advocacy, students expanded their professional networks by connecting with nurses and organizations representing a variety of specialties, including cardiac nursing, women’s health, Hispanic nurses, and many more.

This experience opened our students’ eyes to a side of nursing they hadn’t explored before, the power of advocacy, leadership, and policy. They returned home feeling inspired, empowered, and excited to continue making a difference both at the bedside and beyond.

We are so proud of these future nurse leaders for representing RI and URI Nursing Pathway with professionalism, courage, and passion. 💙🐏
