Tomorrow is Juneteenth, and we are taking the opportunity to acknowledge some African American student history at URI. Rose Butler Brown was the first Black woman to earn a bachelor’s degree from URI in 1921. She went on to earn a Harvard Ph.D. and devote her life to education and civil rights activism. Her legacy continues at URI through the Rose Butler Browne Peer Mentoring Program (LDR 291).
