URI names first deputy police chief
Paul Ricci promoted from his URI police lieutenant post
Oct. 20, 2021
I am pleased to announce that after an extensive search process, Lt. Paul Ricci has been selected for and will be promoted to the rank of deputy police chief effective Oct. 24.
The deputy police chief is a new position and is part of the department’s continuing commitment to building a progressive, responsive, and compassionate law enforcement agency that serves all members of the campus community. The post replaces the position of police major.
Lt. Ricci spent more than 20 years with the North Providence Police Department and served in many positions and divisions, including acting deputy police chief. In North Providence, Lt. Ricci served as the administrative captain and he was in charge of all administrative matters for the department, including dispatch, fleet and civilian workers. His primary duties were to direct, supervise and manage recruitment, training and accreditation.
Prior to his appointment as University police lieutenant, he served as the senior information technologist for URI’s Department of Public Safety and played an integral role in acquiring and implementing new technology for the police department. This has improved the delivery of police services to the community and has made the police department more efficient and effective.
Lt. Ricci earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Roger Williams University and his master’s degree in education from URI. He also recently received a certificate in Emergency/Disaster Management from the Community College of Rhode Island.
Lt. Ricci was hired as a URI police officer in May 2017, first as the evening shift sergeant supervisor and later as day shift lieutenant. He has chaired all search committees for University Police Officer 1 and 2 positions, and the Awards Committee. He is the Clery crime statistics coordinator and the department's evidence/property officer. He has also supervised several complex and major criminal investigations.
Please join me in congratulating Lt. Ricci on his appointment to deputy police chief.
