TAMUK GEAR UP

TAMUK GEAR UP Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) The Texas A&M University-Kingsville GEAR UP Program is in its third year.

It, currently serves 8th grade students at Tom Browne Middle School and Driscoll Middle School, as well as 9th grade students at Roy Miller High School and Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi. In Kingsville, the GEAR UP Program services 8th grade students at Memorial Middle School and 9th grade students at H.M.King High School. GEAR UP Services include:
1. Providing tutors, mentors, and ac

ademic advising.

2. Providing supplemental instruction during school, after school and/or during summer.

3. Educating parents regarding the importance of secondary and postsecondary education and the availability of financial aid to pay for postsecondary education.

4. Providing students with age appropriate college admissions, financial aid, and career awareness counseling.

5. Strengthening students' academic experience with educational cultural trips to universities throughout the state of Texas.

November 21, 2015 students from Memorial, Driscoll, and Tom Browne Middle Schools joined GEAR UP for a career awareness day at the Corpus Christi Baker Hughes facility. Students toured the organization's grounds and labs and were given the chance to meet workers. Workers of the Baker Hughes oilfield services company gave demos using equipment from the oilfields and spoke to the students about various career choices. Baker Hughes and its employees also spoke one-on-one with students encouraging them to continue their education. The students were given hands on experience by engaging in numerous geology and engineering activities.

April 7, 2016 Memorial Middle School and Texas A&M University-Kingsville's GEAR UP Program celebrated their 7th grade Kick Off. 7th grade students and their family members were invited to the MMS campus to meet GEAR UP staff and learn about the program. GEAR UP spoke to everyone about what the program will be offering the school and the students to help them successfully continue on to a post-secondary education. A pep rally was also held to motivate the students to stay in school.

February 26, 2016, students from Memorial Middle School in Kingsville, Texas attended the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering's "Power of Wind" Challenge. The challenge was a day long event that brought together young engineers from all over the South Texas region to compete in a wind turbine contest. Middle and high school students built wind turbines and showcased them to judges in hopes of having the most efficient machine. Once the competition came to an end and awards were announced, the students were given a tour of the TAMUK campus and engineering complex.

December 12, 2015 GEAR UP students from Memorial, Driscoll and Browne Middle Schools joined GEAR UP for a trip to San Antonio, Texas. While in SA, students toured the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), the famous River Walk and downtown San Antonio. Students ended their day with dinner and games at Dave and Buster's Arcade.

May 14, 2016 GEAR UP Students from Memorial, Browne and Driscoll Middle Schools were taken on an educational culutral trip to tour Austin, Texas. Students visited the University of Texas at Austin (UT), St. Edwards Univeristy, The Texas State Capitol and Austin's Park and Pizza.

Summer 2015 GEAR UP traveled to Austin, Texas for an educational field trip with students from both Driscoll and Browne Middle School of Corpus Christi. Students were treated to a tour of the University of Texas campus, the LBJ Presidential Library, and the Texas Capitol.
