🄳Pickler Memorial Staff Book Recommendations! 🄳

Hello Bulldogs and Bulldog friends!

Welcome to the second Pickler Summer Post Series!

Here you'll get a look at what the Pickler staff have been reading throughout the year and what we want YOU to check out this summer!

One of Pickler’s staff members recommends ā€œEveryone on this Train is a Suspectā€ by Benjamin Stevenson. Find it at Truman in the Popular Reading section under the call number ā€˜PR9619.4.S746 E86 2024

Our staff says that ā€œThis book is an irreverently funny take on Agatha Christie's classic locked door mystery "Murder on the Orient Express". It will keep you guessing at suspects while laughing at the main character's antics. It is the second book in the series, but no prior knowledge of the series is necessary to enjoy this book!ā€

🄳Pickler Memorial Library Staff Spotlight 🄳

Hey there, library fans! I'm happy to announce the start of a new summer feature on Pickler's social media- the staff spotlight!

We'll be highlighting some of our excellent staff members here at Pickler, so you'll know the names and roles that go with the lovely smiling faces you see!
This will not be ALL staff at Pickler, just a slice of our amazing and hard-working staff who work every day to bring you a safe, relaxing, stimulating learning environment.

Let's start with me!

I'm Sam Hatala, and I'm the Access Services Assistant in Circulation.

As the Access Services Assistant, I handle fines, reserve books for classes, I help process the MOBIUS books and DVDs you order from other libraries, and I do a lot of other stuff besides! I'm often out and about in the library, so feel free to say hi! I'm also one of the two social media managers (you'll meet the other one next week), so if you see a post from us, I might've been behind it!

Let me know your favorite post down in the comments!

Our photo this week shows one of the Health Department offices on the first floor of Kirk Building around 1929. At that time, each new student was required to have a physical exam under the direction of the Health Department when enrolling in the college, including a dental exam by a dentist. This photo shows a student in a dental chair along with Dr. Haig Hosepian and Dr. C.R. Green, both professors of public health, along with an unidentified nurse.

Hey there, Bulldogs!

Did you know the Mobius Consortium (the people behind the books we get from other libraries) has conferences?

Some of your beloved staff at Pickler traveled yesterday to attend and present at Mobius's 2026 Conference!

Let's give a big round of applause to:

Annie Moots (first photo)
Chrissy Hicks (second photo)
and Stephanie Spratt (her conference photo did not turn out, so here's her staff photo!)

for their fantastic presentations yesterday! They were all well-researched, well-presented, and informative!

We owe them all a special thanks as librarians for contributing to the shared scholarship that informs our best practices and for representing Truman State University!

Happy Monday, Bulldogs!

If you haven't already started, now is a great time to begin your Bulldog Summer Reading Program!

We have tons of book suggestions on our bulletin boards in the library, as you can see, and our summer display case also shows off several great reads for you to enjoy!

Right now, you might be finishing with a book from your favorite genre and about to start a book from your To Be Read (TBR) list- but you can take on this program in any order you choose!

Stay tuned this summer for book recommendations from Pickler Memorial Library staff to help keep you going on your Bulldog Summer Reading Program!

Business education classes were very popular with bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as one-year and two-year certificate programs being offered beginning in 1968. One of the skills these students learned was shorthand, and our photos shows students in two of these classes. One features instructor Dora Clark teaching shorthand, and the other shows students taking transcription using shorthand.
