Did you miss last week because we sure did! But we're back this week with Emily K. who spent some time in the beginning of the summer all the way in South Africa at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Check out these awesome pics she shared! 🦁

Hello and happy ! Today we’re featuring Paul! He volunteers at Runs with Wolves Sanctuary, a wolf sanctuary in Limington, ME about an hour from campus (near Sebago Lake and USM). He shared these incredible pictures with us and says “So much for my hat! The sanctuary is always looking for volunteers and people can feel free to message me for details!” Thanks so much for sharing this incredible opportunity 🐺

Happy everyone! Today we’re highlighting one of our recent alums who has a REAL job. This is Sierra and she works as a ranger for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation in the Boston Harbor Islands State and National Park. We’re so proud of you!

For this week’s we’re featuring another SHOALSer! Our member, Holly, is currently participating in a marine mammal biology undergraduate research internship this summer so she’ll be on Appledore that whole time doing seal surveys on the grey and harbor seals at the nearby duck island. Here’s some pictures of the work she and other interns are doing including some anglerfish embryos. Due to permitting and the safety and conservation of the seals she can’t share any of the photos she’s taking but she is open to sharing more information if anyone is interested! Great work Holly 😊

For more information about SHOALS you can see their page here: Shoals Marine Laboratory

This weeks is Niki! She’s currently working in Colorado at an elephant sanctuary where she cares for this rhino and 6 elephants (which happen to be her favorite animal). Here’s some shots of her in action. Great work Niki 😊🐘🦏

For our second here’s some photos from a founding member and our secretary, Emily. She is currently attending a summer course at Shoals Marine Laboratory, located right off the coast of Maine on Appledore Island in the Isle of Shoals! Students taking classes at SML live the island life and are fully immersed in the sustainable lifestyle and environmentally conservative mindset during their time. Emily is taking Marine Mammal Biology, where she learns about their life history, the natural features of the region, and the legislation surrounding them. Every day students hear from academic professors, mammal experts, and professionals in the fishing industry. Upon completing the class, she will have participated in a seal necropsy, a whale watch, learned to ID individual whale tails, and much more hands-on learning. She and all of our SHOALS Alum highly recommend taking their classes to anyone even remotely interested in any aspect of marine ecosystems, especially those who love experiencing a different kind of classroom.
