CLUB UPDATE 🚨: Iaido ァークル is back this year!

laido is the art of Japanese Swordsmanship dating back about 400 years to the Sengoku, or Warring States Period of Pre-Modern Japan. It was a time where Samurai and their warrior culture flourished, honing their art with precision and passion in equal measure. Kendo, more well known now, is the sport derived from laido, which is the original martial art. In our club, we still have the privilege of learning these ancient techniques, passed on from generations of Sensei to their students. If you'd like to train in the techniques of Samurai combat, hop on down to HPR 202C and grab a practice sword!

Instructor: Alex Walton Sensei
Meeting Times: Biweekly, Mon, Fri 4:00 to 5:00 PM
Meeting Location: HPR 202C
Email ([email protected]) for any questions!!

All, hope that the start of your year has been great! Welcome back for another year of great events with the Japanese Program!

Two of our clubs are having their first meeting of the year, TODAY 🚨🚨🚨

Shamisen Club, 5-6 PM in HSS 113

Learn, play, and develop your skills in the traditional Japanese 3-stringed instrument, Shamisen! Led by Mahagi-LaCure Sensei, in this club you will play traditional songs, learn about the Shamisen, and play together with others! Beginners welcome! Managi-Sensei will be bringing a simple Shamisen (Shabo) that you can use to practice. Please come if you have time!

Shodo Club, 6-7 PM in HSS 57 (HSS 109 on 11/5)

Develop your skills in 書道 (Japanese Calligraphy) with the Shodo Club! Every Wednesday, Dr. Shigetoshi Eda will lead us in mastering the skill of Shodo, developing new skills, writing characters, or even making drawings using traditional brushes (η†). If you have any interest in this traditional, but evocative, art form, please attend this introductory meeting! Great for those learning Kanji.

Last year, we wrote the characters ζ°Έγ€η§‹γ€εΏ—γ€γ‚‚γΏγ˜γ€ζ„›γ€and practiced 寄せ書き(Collective calligraphy)、ι›ͺ、咨硡 (Sumi-e, black ink art)、硡葉書(color art card with calligraphy)、and 中ァむズ書道(large calligraphy).

Join us if you can, and looking forward to a great semester and year! 🍑🍑🍑
