VIRGINIA CREEPER / PARTHENOCISSUS QUINQUEFOLIA
Virginia Creeper is everywhere, especially in the eastern US, it is a very useful addition that you'll never have to go too far to find - you probably have some on your property already. Allot of people do not like this plant, citing it's invasive nature or stating that it is poisonous; neither is 100% true. In very rare cases some people have been known to break out into a mild rash after handling this plant, but primarily it is a case of mistaken identity - many people confuse it with poison ivy or poison oak. As for for it's invasive nature; it is a large vine, it will consume space, plan accordingly.
Virginia Creeper is valuable for bank stabilization, provides soft mast for smaller animals and forage for larger animals. It also provides excellent cover for birds and small mammals. As an ornamental it is a quicker, easier, natural alternative to english ivy.
