From Story to Studio… and we’re not finished yet!

What an incredible start to Arts Day at Riverside Elementary! Thank you Ms. Quier!!!

Our Kutztown University art education students brought stories to life through thoughtful, creative, and engaging lessons that truly connected with young artists. From painting, collage, and shell art to storytelling and imagination, the energy in the room was inspiring.

Just as we were getting into the rhythm of the day, an unexpected early dismissal due to heat brought our afternoon session to a pause… but not an ending.

This is only Part 1.

We’ll be back on April 30th to continue what we started, and we cannot wait to see the rest of Our ARED 210’s student’s amazing lessons come to life.

So proud of our future art educators for their professionalism, flexibility, and heart. You made this day something special.

To be continued…

One of the most exciting components of our ongoing outreach program with Reggio Emilia Ateliers at the Kutztown Public Library is how the caretakers (parents, grandparents and guardians) get very excited about creating their own Ateliers at home from what they gained from our KU students. We partner with the caretakers of children.

86th Annual Art Education Conference: In the Making, A Gathering of Artists and Educators

Yesterday our community came together for a truly inspiring day of creativity, connection, and making. Janet Echelman opened the morning with a brilliant keynote that was insightful, moving, and perfectly aligned with the spirit of the day. She set such a powerful tone for everything that followed.
Thanks to our phenomenal facilitators, the intensive workshops filled Sharadin with energy. Everywhere you turned, you could feel the joy, curiosity, and shared purpose that define our field.
Yes, we had a few glitches, but the spirit of the day never faltered. Everyone showed up with enthusiasm, flexibility, and heart.
A huge thank you to our conference co-chairs Dr. Peg Speirs, Dr. Leslie Sotomayor, and Dr. Julia Hovanec, and to the rest of our amazing team including our GA Kaitlin Tewell, our Administrative Assistant Lisandra Mejia, our wonderful faculty, our distinguished guests, Dr. Marilyn Stewart who hosted the conference dinner, and our dedicated NAEA students who kept everything running smoothly.
We are also so proud of our twelve student teachers who shared their lessons. You were fantastic.
And the collaborative centerpieces created during lunch were absolutely delightful, each one a small celebration of what we can make together.
Finally, thank you to all of our participants for bringing your creativity, curiosity, and warmth. You made this conference a day filled with making, learning, coming together, laughing, problem-solving, and community, a true celebration of and testament to the transformative power of the visual arts.
It was an extraordinary day!

K-4 explored everything from kindergarten spider web weavings, 3rd grade sewn stories, 1st grade personal pennants and much more. Today was Day 1 of an exciting week teaching in the field! KU Art Education students had the opportunity to teach the lessons they’ve been designing in Dr Romanski’s class. They taught in Mrs. Holgate’s art room at Mifflin Park Elementary School. All of the K–4 classes explored sculpture in creative ways, from 4th graders constructing roller coasters to kindergarteners creating puppets and bringing them to life through play-based centers and so many more. We are so proud of these preservice teachers and grateful for Mrs. Holgate’s guidance and partnership throughout this important learning experience!
