At the beginning of August, nine of our McNair Scholars presented their research posters at the UWL Summer Research Symposium. We are incredibly proud of the scholars for this achievement! We’d like to sincerely thank the faculty mentors for supporting our scholars!

One of our new McNair Scholars, Jenna Tuinstra, Public Health & Communication Health Education major had the amazing opportunity to be an Early Literary Intern at the La Crosse Public Library! Jenna shares “During my internship, I’ve learned how to design and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate programming for families while supporting community outreach and library activities. Building a relationship with La Crosse Area Bright Beginnings has shown me how collaborative early childhood work can be. That partnership has also directly supported my McNair research by giving me access to community needs assessment data. Knowing this research will benefit the community has made the experience even more meaningful.”

One of our new scholars, Janae Grissell, Geography major & Sustainability/Environmental Science minor, had the amazing opportunity to study abroad. While taking a Geography class, “Conservation of Global Environments”. Janae shares: “I traveled to Nepal for about 3 weeks, from May 24-June 12. I learned a lot about the Buddhist and Hindu religion as well as conservation efforts in Nepal. They are a very resilient country, so it was amazing to hear about all the things they are doing to conserve and protect their environment.”

One of our new scholars, Jordyn Plitzner, Psychology major & Linguistics minor, had the amazing opportunity to study abroad while taking two courses: “Media and Society” and “Advanced Topics in Public Communication and Advocacy”.
Jordyn shares: “This summer, I studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa for a month from May 22nd to June 21st. There’s so much that I learned while studying abroad: the history of South Africa, media’s impact on society, and the activism and advocacy work during apartheid. My biggest takeaway from studying abroad was that forgiveness and healing takes time.”

🎓Last week, our McNair Scholars kicked off our Graduate School Seminar Series with Alex Jackson who presented on Finding the Right Graduate School Fit. Scholars explored what graduate school is, how to identify programs that align with their academic, personal, and professional goals, and factors to consider when researching graduate programs. A special shoutout to our McNair alum and Administrative Assistant, Alex Morris, for co-instructing the seminar and sharing their firsthand experiences with the graduate school search and application process! 🚀

Through seminars on developing research questions, creating annotated bibliographies, and exploring research methods, you have equipped our scholars with the knowledge and skills to confidently present their research at the UWL Conference. Thank you for your dedication, mentorship, and all you do to support the success of our scholars!

Sometimes the best ideas come from stepping outside your own campus and learning alongside others who share the same passion. This week, our Program Director, Adrienne Loh, is doing just that at the McNair Innovation Forum and Grant Writing Workshops at UCLA. In partnership with McNair leaders from across the country, Adrienne is connecting with colleagues, sharing experiences, and gathering new insights to strengthen opportunities for our scholars.
