Please join us in congratulating Viterbo Director of Campus Ministry Emilio Alvarez, who will be ordained to the permanent diaconate on Saturday, June 6, at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral.

“It was God calling me,” Alvarez said of his decision to become a Deacon. “I have always felt drawn to serve our community, the people in our lives, and the Church.”

After five years of formation, study, and discernment, Emilio will continue his ministry serving the Viterbo community and will be assigned to San Damiano Chapel.

Thank you, Emilio, for your faithful service to Viterbo and the Church.

Who to Know at Viterbo: Karen Hurtgen 🌱

As advisor for the Student Sustainability Club, Karen Hurtgen works with students on projects like pollinator gardens, composting initiatives, tree plantings, and the annual Free Cycle event. In her day-to-day role, she also serves as Viterbo’s Copy and Mail Center coordinator.

“It’s very rewarding,” said Hurtgen about advising the club. “I recruit new members every year and we work together on a number of important projects and fundraisers.” The club's recent Sunflowers for Ukraine fundraisers generated $2400 toward removing land mines from the Ukrainian countryside.

Karen has worked at Viterbo since 1989 and enjoys being part of the university’s close-knit community.

That sense of connection and support has defined Emma Schoen’s time at Viterbo.

She will graduate with honors this Saturday and serve as Viterbo’s undergraduate commencement speaker. 🎓 We’re proud of you, Emma!

A biochemistry major on the pre-med track, she’s heading into a role as an ICU technician as she prepares for medical school, with the goal of specializing in emergency medicine in rural and underserved communities.
