Even in the world’s most opaque economies, data leaves a trace.

A new UC San Diego study explores how researchers can reconstruct economic activity in places like North Korea, where official data is scarce or tightly controlled. Using tools like satellite imagery, price monitoring and trade “mirror statistics,” researchers are piecing together hidden economic signals through a method they call “forensic economics.”

The takeaway: even in global economic “black holes,” meaningful insights are still within reach.

From satellite imagery to clandestine price reports, a new study from the School of Global Policy and Strategy at UC San Diego draws on North Korea to explore economic activity in opaque regimes and information-scarce regions.

Can you tell if you’re chatting with a human or AI? 💻

A new UC San Diego study found that advanced language models can pass a rigorous Turing test, with one model judged “human” 73% of the time in live conversations. The key: giving AI a specific persona to mimic human tone, behavior and even mistakes.

The research highlights a shift in how we think about artificial intelligence. It’s no longer just about knowledge or accuracy, but about humanlikeness and social behavior.

The implications are significant, especially when it comes to trust, online interactions and the potential for deception.

What if the answers you get from AI depend on more than just the question you ask? 💻

A new study from UC San Diego and collaborators reveals that government influence over media can shape what AI chatbots say by shaping the data they learn from. Researchers found that state-coordinated content appears in training data and can influence how models respond to political questions, sometimes producing more favorable answers depending on the language used.

Across 37 countries, the study shows that when media environments are more tightly controlled, AI responses in that country’s primary language are more likely to reflect those narratives. The findings point to a larger issue: AI systems are not neutral. They are built on information environments that carry the imprint of institutions, power and access.

As AI becomes a bigger part of how people learn, interpret and navigate the world, understanding what goes into training data and who shapes it has never been more important.

Could hantavirus spread like COVID-19?

As public attention grows around a recent outbreak linked to a cruise ship, a UC San Diego expert offers important context. While the Andes strain of hantavirus can spread through close contact, it is significantly less transmissible than COVID-19 and unlikely to lead to widespread global outbreaks.

The situation highlights the importance of continued public health monitoring, international coordination and clear science communication, especially as travel increases.

Congratulations to Carter Palmer on being recognized as the 2026 Student/Alumni Innovator of the Year for the Chancellor’s Innovation Awards.

What began with the heartbreak of watching a loved one lose memory and identity to neurodegeneration has become a bold scientific effort to change the future of brain health.

Carter co-founded Third Element Bio to take on one of medicine’s most difficult frontiers: how to preserve cognition, independence, and quality of life as the brain ages. By combining advanced human brain cell analysis with AI-driven drug design, the company is developing RNA therapeutics aimed not at managing symptoms — but at rewiring the cellular aging programs that drive diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS.

As a UC San Diego Alumni, Carter has leveraged the university’s innovation ecosystem — including StartR, the Institute for the Global Entrepreneur’s MedTech Accelerator, and the Rady School of Management venture fellow programs — to help move this vision from concept to company.

Congratulations as well to co-founders Christine Liu and Tony Ngo for building a company with the potential to redefine how we treat neurodegenerative disease and extend healthy cognitive lifespan for millions.

Some startups build products. Others build a different future. Carter and Third Element Bio are doing the latter.
