OASIS (Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services) is the learning center at UC San Diego and provides most of the free tutoring on campus in a collaborative, supportive environment. We are located on the third floor of Center Hall, and coordinate the annual Summer Bridge program. Each year, OASIS serves 3,000 students in language, math, science, study skills, and writing as well as pee

📢📢📢 Center Board Proudly Names Cara Dessert Next CEO 📢📢📢

The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Board of Directors has proudly named Caroline (Cara) Dessert as its next Chief Executive Officer.

After a rigorous and inclusive national search, the Board expressed confidence that Cara is the right person to lead The Center through this next chapter of its incredible history.

“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to serve my community as the CEO of The San Diego LGBT Community Center,” Dessert said. “The Center has an impressive 45-year legacy providing service to and advocacy for our San Diego LGBT community. I am thrilled to join our incredible staff, board and our community to further strengthen the vital work of The Center now and in the years ahead.”

Dessert is a well-known leader within our San Diego LGBT community. She has served as The Center’s Chief Development and Community Engagement Officer since 2016 and previously worked as one of our public policy field organizers. A q***r Latina, Dessert is an attorney and non-profit executive with 15 years in social justice leadership. She previously served as the executive director of Immigration Equality, a national organization focused on LGBT immigrant rights. She also served in the California Department of Justice in the Office of the Attorney General, the U.S. Central District Court, and with California’s Fair Employment and Housing Commission.

After 17 years of leadership, Center CEO Dr. Delores Jacobs will complete her historic tenure on June 30, 2018. Dessert will officially become chief executive officer effective July 1, 2018.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

#91277 Bridge Coordinator
Filing Deadline: Fri 12/15/2017

Under the supervision of the OASIS Assistant Director, the Bridge Coordinator is responsible for the big-picture vision, administration, and management of the Bridge Program, a student support program that is designed to facilitate the academic and sociocultural transition of 300 UCSD freshmen. Bridge commences in the summer to provide a jump-start collegiate experience and provides support throughout students’ first year of college. This position directs office-wide efforts to serve priority student populations, which include: 1) outreach and engagement; 2) program development, implementation, and evaluation; 3) recruitment, training, and supervision of three full-time and 200 student staff; 4) $1.5 million budget allocation and operations.

Independently develops and administers complex programs to provide holistic counseling to high potential student populations, including setting program goals and objectives. Provides direction to undergraduate Academic Achievement Counselors (ATCs) on most complicated and sensitive counseling situations. Advises organization management / departments / academic programs about the special needs of underserved populations. Manages in-service professional staff training programs, provides administrative and instructional direction to OASIS Learning Communities (OLCs), including the weekly OLC seminar. Develops and maintains a high level of collaboration with the six colleges, academic departments, and other campus entities.

Conducts research/assessment on student outcomes. As a member of the OASIS Management Team, assists in the planning and development of OASIS policies and programs. Acts in the place of the OASIS Director as assigned. Serves on Campus and UC system-wide committees regarding academic progress and retention of students in transition.

Must be available during the month of August for the four week, OASIS Bridge program.

Must have access to reliable transportation.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

[FILIPINO AMERICAN SCHOLARS] Dr. Dina Maramba's research focuses on equity, diversity and social justice issues within the context of higher education. Her interests include the influence of educational institutions and campus climates on the access and success among students of color, underserved and first generation college students; the educational experiences of Filipina/o American, and Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

Her co-authored and co-edited books include The Other Students: Filipino Americans, Education and Power; Fostering Success of Ethnic and Racial Minorities in STEM: The Role of Minority Serving Institutions; The Misrepresented Minority: New Insights on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their Implications for Higher Education; and Charting New Realities: Asian Americans in Higher Education; among many other publications.

As you know, we are searching for a new OASIS director and we want your input! Next week there will be two forums for each of the three finalists, one for students and one for the campus community – please see the two attached flyers for details. We encourage you to attend the student forum and if you are unable to participate in the student forums, please join us for the community forums. During this time you will hear from each candidate directly, have a chance to ask questions, and share your thoughts about what you think is important in this position.

Remember your student voice matters and this is a great time for you to provide input on what you’d like to see from our next OASIS Director. Please feel free to share widely with your networks!
