For the first time in university history, Biola University has received a $3.4 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The funding supports the BRIDGE Initiative, an interdisciplinary research project exploring how Christian beliefs shape engagement with genomic medicine. Led by Dr. Liz Hall with co-principal investigator Dr. Eu Gene Chin, the initiative brings together faculty across psychology, theology and health sciences to advance research at the intersection of faith and science.

“This grant matters because it positions [Biola for] truly interdisciplinary collaboration,” Hall said. “That kind of integration is rare, and it reflects the best of what a Christian university can offer.”

How should Christians respond when someone is suffering?

Liz Hall, professor of psychology, along with Kelly M. Kapic and Jason McMartin, professor of theology, explores why searching for a simple explanation for pain can miss the deeper biblical invitation.

Drawing on psychological research and theological insight, the authors suggest that those who suffer are often less concerned with why suffering happens and more focused on how to live through it.

“Lament is a spiritual discipline that can be conceptualized as a pathway through suffering that may lead to increased intimacy with God,” — Dr. Liz Hall, professor of psychology at Rosemead School of Psychology.

In her recent research on lament, published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology, Dr. Hall proposes that intimacy comprises three aspects. The first is mutual presence. God is always present, but we are not always looking for or prepared to be present with him. In lament, we are called to attune to God's presence. Second is mutual closeness. This means that both parties are participating in mutual vulnerability in their relationship. This usually takes place by revealing oneself to God and meditating on what God has revealed about Himself through His word. The third proposed aspect of intimacy is intersubjectivity. This is the intermingling of two minds in such a way that you gain better insight and acceptance into how you are connected and separate from each other.
