Guillermo Escalante ’97, MBA ’99⁠

From student-athlete to leader in sports science and higher education, Guillermo Escalante ’97, MBA ’99, has built a career rooted in perseverance, mentorship, and purpose.⁠
⁠
After immigrating from Costa Rica as a child and overcoming challenges as a young father, Guillermo found his foundation at the University of La Verne. Through the support of ULV mentors, he discovered his passion for athletic training, earned his bachelor’s degree early, completed his MBA, and went on to become a nationally recognized professor, researcher, author, and leader in sports nutrition.⁠
⁠
Today, he serves as Associate Dean of the College of Natural Sciences at Cal State San Bernardino, where he helps students, especially underrepresented students in STEM, believe in themselves and pursue careers they love.⁠
His story is a powerful reminder to show up for yourself, keep moving forward, and never underestimate the impact of a mentor who believes in you.⁠

From a childhood dream of working in outer space to leading at the highest levels of the space industry, Michaelyn Thomas EdD ’17 is proof that purpose, resilience, and passion can take you beyond the stars.⁠
⁠
Through her doctoral journey at the University of La Verne, Dr. Thomas found her voice and deepened her life’s purpose in space exploration, systems innovation, and inclusive leadership. Today, she continues to make an impact as a program manager and system-of-systems engineer at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, while also teaching the next generation of engineering leaders.⁠

Her story is a powerful reminder that representation matters, purpose can evolve, and when diverse voices come together, we can create truly out-of-this-world innovation.⁠

Rayna Harrison ’19 grew up surrounded by the spirit of the University of La Verne through her grandparents, beloved campus figures Roland “Ort” and Cornelia “Corni” Ortmayer. Their commitment to putting people first, encouraging lifelong learning, and using athletics as a way to help students grow continues to inspire Rayna’s work today.⁠
⁠
Now an assistant athletic trainer at Concordia University Irvine, Rayna is carrying on the Ortmayer legacy by supporting student-athletes not just in competition, but in life. Her story is a powerful reminder that a La Verne education extends far beyond campus. It lives on through the people we serve, the values we uphold, and the impact we make.⁠
