What does advocacy and service look like in practice?

For students in Saint Martin’s University’s, it meant stepping beyond the classroom and into communities where compassion, advocacy and human dignity are lived every day. Through presentations on nonprofit organizations and reflections on a service immersion experience at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, students explored the transformative power of community engagement.

At Homeboy Industries, students encountered a model rooted in kinship, healing and second chances—one that supports formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated individuals through job training, education, mental health services and community support. These lessons reflect Saint Martin’s Benedictine values of hospitality, community, respect for persons and service to others.

By connecting academic learning with real-world experiences, students deepened their understanding of social responsibility, servant leadership and the role each person can play in building a more just and compassionate society.

What happens when Benedictine values meet 21st-century innovation?

At Saint Martin’s University, it looks like students coming together to solve real-world challenges with creativity, purpose and a commitment to serving others.

During the Hackathon for Good, students from business, engineering, and computer science collaborated across disciplines, demonstrating the Benedictine values of community, hospitality, respect for the dignity of every person and stewardship. The Hackathon for Good was a powerful reflection of what makes a Saint Martin’s education distinctive: pairing innovation and critical thinking with values that encourage students to lead with purpose and make a meaningful difference in the world.
